The 2014 F1 season was my first time watching formula one.

I found the Autosport forums early in 2014 and found the various poster and threads a great help in educating me about the sport.

And I would like to share the top five things that I learned from my fellow Autosport forum members.

(Yes, this is total tongue-in-cheek sarcasm.)

1: Being beaten by your teammate is a sure sign of inferiority.

Forever marking ones skillset as belonging to those F1 pilots of the second class. A black stain on one’s racing record that will follow you throughout your career, forever separating you from being considered as one of the racing elite.

Unless that drivers name happens to be Jenson Button.

2:  DRS is an Abomination.

It is the symbol of all that is wrong with modern F1, the very thief of proper overtaking, and is to be roundly condemned at every opportunity, for even the slightest reason. No invective is too strong when applied to the overtaking horror show that is the upturned wing flap of the DRS being used in action.

Unless you are Daniel Ricciardo, and you use it to overtake Nico Rosberg for the lead in the last remaining laps of the Canadian Gran Prix. In that case no one cares… Because, well; Screw you Rosberg!

3: The resurgence of Williams back to the top of the grid, was one of the best stories of the 2014 F1 season.

To go from scoring only 5 points in 2013 to climbing to number three in the WCC with nine podium finishes, is a noteworthy achievement. While not having the racing savvy to snag some wins off of Mercedes mistakes this year like Red Bull, they are definitely on the upswing, and they have a good driver line up going into 2015.

But such a story would have been even better if the word ‘Williams’ was replaced with ‘McLaren’. (Or Ferrari if you're not from England...)

4: Vettel is the Devil.

Riding around with his little German finger in the air… I mean come on! Everyone knows that the Newey-mobile he was in was the real reason that he won four titles in a row.  Having the same driver win four titles in a row made F1 boring and uninteresting to watch. Dominant streaks like the 4 year run of Redbull and the 2014 run by Mercedes are bad for the sport.

Of course if  McLaren or Ferrari went on a dominant streak; that would be a different story....

5:  The engine sound is Horrible.

In fact it is so bad I should really stop watching F1 right now. Just listen to it – it sounds like a wet fart and a lawn mower had a love child. How can I watch f1 with such a bad engine sound?

*nine races into the season*

The pathetic engine sound detracts from making f1 special and I really can’t stand to watch it anymore. There is no reason anymore to attend any of the races let alone watch them on television.

*end of the F1 season*

I really don’t think I will watch F1 in 2015, it has lost so much since they went to the v6 turbo’s. The bad sound really made the whole season un-watchable. Although I’m glad that Hamilton won and that the championship wasn’t decided on double points.

*starts thread on bad 2015 engine noise*

Did I mention that this is not in any way serious...???

No, but it's also 100% pointless.

I thought 2014 was the year that being beaten by your teammate became a worthless measurement because the driver in question "didn't like the car" or "had an off year". However, when he wins in the best car it is a sign of his undeniable skill that greatly exceeds everyone else.

Remember this never, ever applies to the McLaren drivers in 2007 though. Equal on points to a rookie = absolute failure.

Vettel being beaten by Ricciardo, Raikkonen by Alonso was a sure sign of their inferiority. Unless you are Jenson Button, who has beaten Magnussen.

...because Daniel Ricciardo is so good that he did not have to use DRS. He did it all by himself because he is F1s new wunderkind. And no, Rosberg was not hampered by having 160 horsepowers less!

It's funny because it's true.

It's even more true if you replace "McLaren or Ferrari" with "Hamilton".

6. Finishing behind your teammate 70% of the time (in two car-finishes) means you've been giving him a hard time and therefore deserve credit.

7. However, if your name is Nico Rosberg, you're never going to get enough credit.

8. Now that both Vettel and Kimi had an exceptionally awful year, it's crystal-clear that we haven't seen the "real" Kimi or the "real" Vettel but some evil twins. Should their form improve next season, expect the real Kimi and Vettel to be behind the wheel again.

9. Hamilton could win 21 races next season, his Mercedes-seat would still be in doubt because the board desperatly wants to place Fernando Alonso into the team as an ambassador of peace. After all, the explosive atmosphere within the team needs some cooling-down.

2014 proved that Vettel and Raikkonen were always rubbish and always lapping at least 0.5 seconds slower than the True top drivers. Their whole career is a fake illusion.

2014 also proved that Hulkenberg is most of all a very boring driver, who besides all forgettable things is incapable of finishing on the podium.

Quite the opposite if you read any thread on here. Being beaten by your team mate is actually just a sign of the hardware not suiting you. Its every drivers right as of the UN Convention on International Racing Drivers to get a car that entirely suits their style of driving. Rather then adapting or accepting that the other guy has just done a better job, all blame should rest of the cars characteristics, or the regulations themselves, or the tyres, or the braking system, or the hybrid power unit. No credit shall be given to the superior driver  if their team mate utters the words "I don't like the car".

"Fernando Alonso is better than Yuji Ide"

"No, Yuji just didn't have the front end he needs"

TV ratings are proportional to the decibel emitted by the cars

Everybody except Lauda is against Lewis Hamilton, especially his team boss and his engineering crew.

We still have a full indycar season ahead of us

On that note, I feel a contribution from Planet Indycar to this thread is in order. I know F1 is in the title, but honestly, this is Racing Comments and starting a whole new thread would be unnecessary clutter, no? :p

Things I learned about Indycar from Atlas F1 Autosport Forums 2014

1. JPM is the man.

Never mind that he wasn't really a factor for the majority of the year. He wins the fan vote by virtue of his sheer existence. Jet-Dryer Man enlightened us all last year about the true nature of those annoying safety advocates whose voices seem to be a little too loud these days. Get on his bad side? Oh, deer...

There's also the infamous Happy Montoya, but I can't find it and my image-hoster of choice is down for maintenance. Help?

2. Andretti is an ASS.

What else do you call someone who ignores blue flags to back GLORIOUS SATO up into his teammate's clutches? Marco, Marco, Marco... *tsk tsk tsk*

3. Following upon the above:

GLORIOUS SATO

4. The jinx is real. Embrace the jinx.

It exists, is passed between members, and appears randomly during race weekends. Witness the hapless Sheepmachine unintentionally submarining countless drivers' Mid-Ohio excursions, beginning here. PaYR is the Keeper of the Jinx, but you only rule the jinx in Soviet Russia, so...

5. Thankfully, Scott Dixon doesn't race in F1.

Scott Dixon can save so much fuel he could actually start the race with a negative fuel load and still finish it... in first! In today's fuel-conscious era, the F1 superstars would be no match for him. Or something.

6. Karen Gillan

Need I say more.

7. Dedicated fans are dedicated.

Honestly, give the brave men and women of Planet Indycar a hand. The race-in, race-out delivery of fantastic opening posts and contribution to making the sport as amusing as possible has actually accomplished the impossible and made an internet forum a worthwhile recipient of one's weekend afternoon time. You can smell the passion--which is usually kinda disgusting--but not when it smells like racing. Hopefully.

This. Is. Indycar.

'The Jinx' IS an intangible and cannot be apportioned to or by anyone or anything.

"No, Yuji just didn't have the front end he needs"

Finally the truth is out!

It is never the driver's fault when he finishes behind his team mate. It is always the team's fault who did not succeed in providing him with the material he needs...

I think that's also what Marchionne was thinking.

They race against all other drivers not just the teammate.  Just wanted to point that out.  If you beat your teammate it must mean you are good?  No, it could still mean that you both suck.  You get a feel over a season about who is doing well and who is not.  If you manage the perceptions, you'd sacrifice beating the rest of the field in order to beat your teammate but if you do that, that's not true racing to me.

It's coming from a very weak position.  It's very defensive.  A good driver beats everyone, teammates and everyone else as well.  The teammate thing annoys me (if you can't tell).  I'm not sure if this goes along with this thread or goes against it.  I just want to point out that when they race, they race against everyone not just against the driver in the same car.  The machinery might not be equal but they are still competing against 20 other people.  Not just one other person.  Overall for 2014, I enjoyed (most of the races) week to week, because they told a story and were entertaining.  For me, it's not about the perceptions or the reputations but for those 2 hours where everything is unpredictable and you just wait and see what happens.  Completely in the moment.. no perceptions.  Just enjoying whatever happens in that moment.  It's unpredictable sometimes but it's nice to be reminded that it's a dynamic unpredictable thing.. no one knows what will happen next.  McLaren Honda could be great or they could be awful.. so we get excited and then watch and find out.  No excuses.  The cream always rises to the top.

1. Racing was always better 10 years ago.

2. Noise is EVERYTHING.

3. Kimi's bad performances are never his fault.

4. Jenson Button's good performances are always just lucky and, even if he can beat KMag regularly, he should quit F1 anyway to make room for the Danish driver.

5. Nico Hulkenburg should be driving for every top team.

"Next year" is always a "best season ever" where three or four teams will drive seriously for the championship with either Sauber or ForceIndia, all of a sudden, maybe miraculously having a quite handy car for being able to tease the top teams...

I've learnt, if you take your review from 2013 and you switch Mercedes and Red Bull, everything is the same.

-A dominant team becomes world champion

-with a mediocre second driver

-world champion ignores teamorders

-other team is caught cheating

bring on 2015

That is extremely impressive. Also, I'd totally forgotten that Newg nearly won that race before one of his crew fell over in the pitlane.

I thought the board was of the opinion Hulk could gather points... but that means nothing because he is so boring he deserves to be kicked out of the sport, post haste.

1. If you were a top driver early in your career, but have gone progressively worse then its someone elses fault.

2. If you are a top driver now, but weren't early in your career your top results are due to luck and you should just retire asap.

3. Mercedes are desperate to get rid of Lewis Hamilton and replace him with Alonso

4. Fingerboy never was any good, it just took 7 seasons for everyone to see that.

5. F1 cars are ugly, have horrible sounds and F1 was sooo much better and more interesting before.

I'd just like to add things I've learnt personally on these forums in 2014 were:

1) Don't piss off the mods.

2) Don't be lured into baits and fights.
