Daniel Ricciardo is hopeful of dethroning Lewis Hamilton - as the fastest driver in Top Gear's 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' challenge.

Ricciardo is to finally get his chance on the popular BBC2 programme, with his attempt at the famous Dunsfold Aerodrome site in Surrey to be screened on 8 February. "I hope it's cold so the engine is crisp, but I also hope it's dry so I can actually have a good crack," he says.

LOL- and here come the the endless bickering over what is meant to be a bit of fun!  No doubt the engine is too quiet so that should get rid of a fair chunk of viewers. ;)

I trust that he does well, as he is a truly fresh and interesting new face on the F1 circuit and a bloody good racer/driver.

It should be a good interview too, Clarkson is a big Ricciardo fan, I hope we get some juicy details from last season.

I'm amazed that car still runs. It gets thrashed around an airfield by F1 drivers for 10 or so laps each year and then presumably sits parked for the rest of the year. Can't be good for it.

And that's on top of being used as a celebrity racing car in its early life.

I've never really understood why it has to be exclusive to just F1 drivers either.

I love how fans have gravitated to DR... so many 'experts' were so sure he just got the job to be Vettel's whipping boy since they didn't hire Kimi..

amazing how some great wheel to wheel racing with great drivers can change minds...

Christian and Adrian had he data and knew who to hire...

well done, Daniel...

Do F1 pilots ever get to drive faster cars around the test track?

I've never really understood why it has to be exclusive to just F1 drivers either.

Because it was their standard reasonably priced car originally, and it was used for the first F1 driver.  So then they needed to retain it for the very occasional times that they managed to snare another F1 driver, in order to provide a valid comparison between them.  Imagine the whinging if Vettel had to drive a car slower than Webber...

Schumacher was rumoured to be behind the wheel for the Ferrari FXX lap, and Heikki for the lap done in the R25.

Christian and Adrian had he data and knew who to hire...

There was a rumour that they were against his promotion(Newey didn't want to design wider cockpit for Ricciardo to fit in),and it only happened because Marko insisted on it.

Christian and Adrian had the data, but Christian went on all year how surprised they were. Truth is they got lucky and didn't know any more than we did. They picked him because they considered him the more promising of the Toro Rosso drivers - not much more than that. Motor racing is a very unmeritocratic sport and it is very hard to get any sort of objective measure of performance, and the F1 graveyard is full of drivers that just didn't get the breaks.

If someone insists on posting the time, can you make sure you use spoiler tags, including when you quote the post to tell them how thoughtless they are.

I looked it up too after the guys here posted the answer. I wouldn't really call it spoilers very much, finding out now is the same as in a week time. I'm looking forward to the interview mostly.

Clarkson is a big fan of Dan's if I recall correctly. Called him F1's best driver last year. Should be a good interview.

I find Top Gear less entertaining with every series and the SIARPC segment has always been the most boring part of the show, F1 driver or not.

Nah that's one of th ebetter segments depending on the guest. Some are fantastic, others really bad (looking at you Boris becker) but I like watching them drive.

Top Gear's biggest issue is that it gets a little too stupid sometimes, i know it's meant to be fun but i feel it's at it's best when they actually honestly tell you what they think of a car.

Most boring segment without fail are the face races, pitting a push bike against a focus or whatever, always FF those sections.

Daniel Riccardo smiles far to much to be called a Honey Badger. Honey Badger don't give a s***.

Yeah, I get Moto GP's Cal Crutchlow being called the Honey Badger, because of his abrasive personality, but Daniel is WAY to nice.

Surely the most boring guest they've ever had was Bob Geldof? I bet Clarkson could have had a more interesting conversation with a wet flannel.

And, as ever, Sniff Petrol gets it spot on regarding Top Gear - or rather people's reactions to it.

With Top Gear back on BBC2 this Sunday, car forum RevWheel has taken the unusual step of getting its discussion thread about the programme out of the way in advance.

‘We decided it would be quicker and easier to get the Top Gear thread done before the weekend,’ explained RevWheel moderator, the Reverend Will Moderator. ‘So we asked someone to say they didn’t enjoy the show, and someone else to complain that it’s all “scripted”, and then someone else to moan about the mucking about, and then someone else to say ‘I enjoyed it’ with an emoticon that denotes embarrassment, and then someone else to say they hate it and complain that it isn’t about cars any more, and then someone else to ask why everyone watched it if they don’t like it, and then someone else to agree and point out that it’s an entertainment show not a car show, and then someone else to say it’s time it was cancelled, and then someone else to say it’ll never be cancelled because it makes the BBC too much money, and then someone else to state completely inaccurate facts about how much the show earns, and then someone else to say it’s too “scripted” again, and then someone else to mention William Woollard, and then we just copy and pasted all that over and over and over again until we ended up with 47 pages of repetitive drivel, and that spared us having to do it for real on Sunday night.’

‘This really has saved a lot of time,’ Rev. Moderator noted. ‘In fact, we’re now considering doing pre-built threads for politics, Chris Harris and the Mazda MX5.’

It's because the honey badger takes on much bigger animals without being intimidated, like Ricciardo did in 2014 with Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton at Hungary and Germany.

This video explains the name (warning, swearing):
