I don't remember any bad calls for Toronto 2013 (the last race Barnhart officiated) and I really don't care enough about who does it to get riled up. There's always going to be moaning about decisions. Charlie Whiting and the F1 stewards get plenty of criticism and with the more competitive nature of Indycar racing, complaints are inevitable.

Barnhart has a history of questionable decisions and inconsistent rulings dating back to the Tony George era.  He's in with the Hulmans, (and the likely reason he hasn't been fired) so that means he's in with Miles as well. From what I understand it's a pretty dysfunctional organization and they may not have been able to find anyone more qualified to take the job.

Good thing Will Power is defending champ. If he flips off the officials' booth again this year, he'll be able to claim that he was just reminding Barnhart who is number 1.

Ha ha, seriously?  I love it how even in the news story announcing his return, Indycar officials are taking great pains to point out that there are now measures in place to limit the damage from him.

And then he'll probably decide to start the season in June and end it in August...

A couple of excerpts from Curt Cavin's article in the Indy Star:

Brian Barnhart's return to the position of IndyCar Series race director shouldn't have been a surprise. It was more than a year in the making.

Despite slipping behind the scenes since being demoted after the 2011 season, Barnhart continued to lead race-day operations, oversee the review of regulations, coordinate event security and assist with the safety and medical groups. He even spent last year working as a regular race-day steward. His critics just didn't know it.

I know who he is. Just because I'm not crying that the sky is falling and happen to state facts... Derrick Walker is the director of competition not Barnhart and penalty calls are made by a panel (you know, like steward panels in F1?). I can see why people wouldn't want the job, it's a thankless task and endless criticism from all sides is common. It's not as though Beaux Barfield made popular decisions (Indy 500 2012, Milwaukee 2012, Sonoma 2013 etc).
