It is with regret that I have to tell you that the noted landscape artist Cavendish Morton passed away yesterday at the Elms Nursing Home in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. Away from the his painting Cavvy's other love was motor racing and he was in fact Chairman of the Snetterton Motor Racing Club, and would often be seen there sketching the cars. One evening at a party he was introduced to John Ogier of Essex Racing, as a result of the meeting Cavvy went on to style Ogier's new racing cars that were built by John Tojeiro. As well as the Tojeiros; Cavvy went on to style the Berkeley Bandit and the Britannia GT, unfortunately both cars proved too expensive to produce. Cavvy also worked with Brian Lister turning his design drawings into three dimensional sketches to be presented to the press. In 1959 Cavendish had the sad job of doing the original artwork for the memorial at Snetterton for his great friend Archie Scott Brown who had been killed a year earlier.
In the latter years with failing eyesight Cavvy spent his time listening to classical music, he would have been 104 years old on 17th Feb this year, so he had a good innings. To quote his friend Richard Weaver “A great man who made a great age”, and who could argue with that.
My thoughts go out to his close family and the many friends he had made over the years.
