So, now that (with the honourable exception of the new Force India) we've seen all of the new cars on track, I think it's time for some almost entirely uninformed speculation. Yes, we've only had one test and yes, the times from that test are almost entirely useless, but hey! What are forums for?
I think almost everybody will expect Mercedes to continue to have an advantage at least at the start of this season, so it should come as no surprise that I'm voting for both their drivers to win races this year. It'll be interesting to see whether Rosberg can deliver on his pledge to make up his race-pace deficit to Hamilton, and I expect this to be a fight played out once again at the sharp end of the grid.
Elsewhere, whatever Newey's pessimism, I expect Red Bull to produce a competitive car once again. I'd be very surprised if Ricciardo didn't win a race, and wouldn't be at all surprised to see him break into the title fight. I expect, though, that with Red Bull having a pretty clear team leader, Kvyat will struggle to match the pace of his teammate and won't be breaking Vettel's youngest-ever GP winner record.
I've also gone for both Ferrari drivers, for two reasons; blind fanboyism, and the wild optimism that a half-decent first test engenders in us all but that we don't like to admit to. Gwarn Seb!
I don't think Mclaren or Williams will be winning races this year. Mclaren were absolutely nowhere last year when they had the best engine; to expect them to have made up their enormous deficit in chassis performance as well as for Honda to produce an instant winner is too optimistic for me in spite of what is probably the best driver line-up on the grid.
Williams meanwhile, are the other way around; I do expect them to have produced a good car, but I don't expect their drivers to be able to deliver. I had the niggling sense all last season that neither of them was really up to winning a race, and I think that'll continue into this season. Also, in the second year of a major rules change things tend to revert to the mean (see 2010) with the big teams moving forwards and the teams with less resources sliding backwards. Sadly, I think this is likely going to happen to Williams as well.
Anyway, thoughts? Let's speculate wildly!
NB. I haven't included Manor in the poll. Whilst I sincerely hope they make it to Melbourne, I don't think that's missing much. Whatever, good luck to them!
