There was a Fuller Brush Catalog created in 1958-59 that had Phil Hill as the subject. In it, there is a picture of Phil and Florini posing with a Ferrari sports racer by the factory gate. Can anyone identify that car? There seem to be two theories.

One is that it is 0744 before it got the engine from Portago's crashed 335S. I think the picture was taken late enough in 1958 that 0744 was already shipped to the U.S. Phil drove it a Watkins Glen on 28 Sept 1958.

The second is that it is 250 TR 0726, a 1958 car converted to 1959-style bodywork. This makes more sense to me because, in the picture, the car has a 1958 full-fendered body, but a perspex air intake, a feature I don't think 0744 ever had either as a3 or 4 liter car. Since 0726 was the prototype for the 1959 cars which used perspex hood scoops, I prefer the second theory.

Can anyone elaborate on this? Since I'm not facile enough to post the image in question, I'm happy to send it to anyone who inquires. provamo@att.net

Many thanks,

This has been solved. 0744 was right had drive, 0726 was lhd. I guess the lesson is to look more carefully at the images before posting an inquiry. 0726 it is.
