The 70's is a goldmine for absolutely awful cars... there were way too many blind men working in sheet metal in the 70's methinks!

The regular car wasn't so bad, but the Monaco version was horrific.
And how about the teapot?

I think some of these cars are pretty good looking. It's nice to see a distinctive car on the grid.
That Caterham though.....

It may have been worse than dog-barf slow, but it's not what you'd call "ugly" tbh.

Arrows A2 I despise most of all...
I noticed some (obviously crazy!) person put this 'best-looking' car thread
Tony Southgate was a great designer, and produced some gorgeous racing cars...but to my mind this car was a bloated slug. With some major exceptions, I'd say, on balance, the ground effects era produced some pretty cluncky, nasty looking machinery.

Boy, people are posting some pictures of fantastic (if unique) cars considering this is supposedly an ugly car thread.

That livery just reminds me of a fried egg!
And who ever was doing the frying didn't keep the yolk intact.

Something tells me is the same people posting pics of current F1 cars in the best looking thread

I don't know about ugly, but some of these cars are genuinely funny. Impossible not to laugh!
SO...
But what can you do, that's evolution. Designers have had to try to out all kinds of experiments to get where we are.

Did they not have wind tunnels in the 1970s???
Car aerodynamics were barely understood back then, the designs were catered more towards the mechanical necessities of low COG, wide wheels and cooling. The Lambo Muira from that era tended to try to flip over backwards due to the bad aerodynamic design, as an example of the lack of understanding. In F1 wings barely existed and were simple flat panels. In the late 70s, ground effects started to come into play, so design began to focus on the floor and airflow, but it wasn't until the 80s that the currently recognisable aerodynamic F1 car shape began to emerge.
Back then there were far less restrictions on shapes and sizes of car parts and no one (appeared to) care a thing about how pretty the car was, as long as it went as fast as they knew how to build, and so you got some pretty wacky unique ideas. Frankly I prefer that era in terms of inventiveness than today's heavily restricted formula with enforced primitiveness in many areas (computer control, suspension, moving aero parts, braking, and a million other things).

Yes it was, totally out of proprtions with the long nose, tiny sidepods and bulbous rear.
Posted 19 February 2015 - 13:25
Well, I know this car was an utter failure but to me at least it still looks more eye appealing that the current highnosed multifinned overstretched long wheel base things with a book shrank between the rear wing. I'm not gonna say it's beautiful but the proportions are better than what we see nowadays.
Story goes that the car appeared at the Goodwood FoS and on that occasion the engine ran longer and better than ever in it's entire actual F1 career.....

Couldn't agree more. Modern cars are narrower but much longer, not a good look.
