Just to complete the set of threads...
An obvious answer is the step-nosed Red Bull RB8 from 2012.
Enzo Ferrari hated the appearance of his Ferrari 312T4, but I quite like it.

Enzo Ferrari hated the appearance of his Ferrari 312T4, but I quite like it.
I recall having read that in 1979 he had called hit the most beautiful and best ever car he had ever built.
Thoug not a real beauty, I like it too and rate it above everything built after 2005....

Never liked the mid-nineties Benetton's either, they always looked 'fat' to me...
Posted 19 February 2015 - 13:55
Anything post 2008 would surely qualify. I can't think of any other car with such out of proportion parts. The wing rules are a mess.
I kinda like the Benetton, the '96 version looked terrible due to the cockpit edges. They made the same mistake as McLaren and Ferrari.

I recall reading that he compared it to a lawnmower, although he may well have been talking it up at the launch...or revising his opinion after it won both championships.

I looked up the B196 to remind myself what it looked and it reminded me of another reason I didn't like Mid-ninties Benetton's; the liveries are awful, the B196 looks like a right dogs dinner...

Yeah, gee they were ugly in 2007.
Posted 19 February 2015 - 14:57
Probably a contentious choice but compared to it's rivals I don't think the W196 (open wheel variant) was a particularly attractive championship winner.
Obviously though it's miles better looking than anything from about 1995 onwards...

To be fair, any car that won it that year was probably going to qualify.
Certainly not the MP4-27.

You lot are so shallow. These cars have personalities you know. I am disgusted with the lot of you.

Agreed. That was and still is horrific.

The Brawn gets my nod.

You know what they say about the girl described as having a really nice personality?

yeah the early 70's tyrells were awful.
Posted 19 February 2015 - 17:43
I don't think Benetton ever created a single worthwhile colour scheme after their first season with Tyrrell.
But this thing was the F1 equivalent of the Ford Scorpio. From any angle behind it, it looked fine, but get to the front and...
...KILL IT!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!

Tbh, I always thought the Benettons and Williams cars of the mid-late 90s were ugly as hell with those noses.

Whilst we're on the subject of Ferrari's, here's Niki Lauda's 1975 312T. Have must be honest though, I'm not a fan of 70's F1 cars when it comes to ascetics.
*edit* Not a fan of the mid-nineties high noses either, early nineties low noses all the way.

Oh dear god that's hideous! Thank god it never raced. Suddenly the current noses aren't so bad...

Rather have this than anything post 2005, At least the dimensions and proportions are still fine on this one. Nice length, width, overhan front ant rear, maybe the details could be better but that's about it compared with anything post 2005.

The DW12's not the prettiest car around but that comment's an insult even to that Dallara!

'82 WCC. It looked fine with other aero packages, but this... ugh.

The 1986 Benetton is actually pretty cool, Fabi & Berger were so quick in it

I still remember Clive James' comments on the car in the 1982 season review.
"The Ferrari had a new bi-plane rear wing, to provide more, downforce? upthrust? advertising space? Nobody knew..."
"...Villeneuve came home third, when we finally found out what the rear wing was for. It was to get him disqualified."

The regular version is one of my favourite cars ever if it comes to looks, simple yet efficient looking as it eventually appeared to be as well.
This version was of course brought to life to show that Ferrari could think creative too if it came to applications of the rules at a time when the Cosworth gang abused the rules in a manner like never seen before yet.
Can't say I like what Ferrai did in later years if it comes to rule application influences but 1982 still makes me feel sick, given the price paid for it.

I remember thinking the high nose on the Benetton was quite nice, I was under 10 years old, but I still think it's not to bad...
the Ferrari from 79 is a strange looking thing.
