Re-badging the engine in the back of the Haas and sticking a clover leaf on the air box would make perfect sense, which means that it probably wont happen.

I would really like to see the Alfa name back in F1 and this would be the simplest and most cost effective way to do it and I am struggling to think of a downside.

Not picking on you, Thursday, as a few have mentioned "seeing the Alfa name back in F1."

That is all you would see: "the name," along with a new crowd in the Paddock Club. FIAT Chrysler cannot afford to bring Alfa back into F1 and so all they can do is attach their name to something. Like calling a Renault engine a Tag-Heure, or some such artifice. It is a sham and it is too bad it will convince some folks that it will make their new road Alfa something extra special.

True it would just be a badge but considering that the Alfa Mito is a Fiat Punto with a pretty frock and the Giulietta is the half brother of a Dodge and a Chrysler, sticking an Alfa badge on a Haas/Ferrari/Dallara would be quite in keeping with the current state of the motor industry.

Ferrari started as a team racing Alfa-Romeo cars, so it would be a nice piece of circularity.  And Ferrari once badged a Lancia GP car as a Ferrari.  So if a Ferrari engine gets badged as an Alfa it would hardly be shocking.

It sounds so much like fantasy

Sergio Marchionne eyeing Alfa Romeo F1 team for 'young Italian drivers' - http://gptim.es/2ks  #F1

"Alfa Romeo in F1 could become a fine breeding ground for young Italian drivers," said Marchionne on the same day Ferrari announced it had signed GP2 runner-up Antonio Giovinazzi as its third driver.

"The best one, Giovinazzi, is already with us, but there are others besides him, and they are struggling to find space.

"Alfa Romeo, more than our customer teams [Haas and Sauber], could offer them that space."

He added: "There is room for an Alfa Romeo return, possibly as a collaboration with Ferrari."

Alfa Romeo's return is some way off though, with Marchionne insisting it must first make more money through sales if it's to get its own team.

"Not yet, though, because Alfa must first make money through sales of the Giulia and the Stelvio [models]."

Dodge to NASCAR, Alfa Romeo to Formula One

Marchionne says a lot if the day is long.

We already have a TAG Heuer engine, we could have an Alfa Romeo powering a Haas in 2017 if they want to.

Marketing. They need to seel Giulias and Stelvios, and if I'm correct, the demands are below of what they expected. So they throw the Alfa name to get some headlines.

As a previous Sud, 33 and 156 owner, I can say that if their entry relies on selling more cars, than don't hold your breath.

Any source of that low demands?

Alfas are selling below expectations in the US, at the very least:

Marchionne set a 75.000-100.000 sales goal globally, 40% of which would be for US, another 40% for Europe and 20% China.

Going for the minimum of 75.000 a year globally, this would mean Europe should have around 30.000 sales/year. Which leaves us with 2.500 monthly.

The best month so far is September with 1.718 sales acorss Europe ( http://carsalesbase....a-romeo-giulia/ ).

A friend of mine order one and got it in 32 days. That's very quick for a new car. This means one of two things: Great response from the factory or low demand from sales. You know on which one I'm betting

Well come 2018 there could be a Manor fire sale if they fail to to be 10th as there cash will be cut of permanent as they then fall out the '''criteria window for WCC money''  so dont count your chickens yet

buying/renaming Sauber or Haas or STR?

Will never happen both are stable teams that will cost way more than they are willing to afford plus one has a mountain of debt the other wants to sell CNC machines

If they need to sell more cars, maybe they can come up with another variation on the Miata and call it an Alfa... :rotfl:

Lol, we have the MX-5 (Miata is the US name) and the Fiat Spider 124 which share a lot of parts (should be the most reliable Fiat with ease. ;)).

And the autonews article:

Alfa is the latest luxury marque -- after Porsche, Jaguar, Bentley, Maserati and Lamborghini -- to expand beyond a traditional car lineup and market increasingly popular SUVs and crossovers.

Lol again, luxury marque? That is new. ;)

It used to be simple:

Fiat - common cars

Alfa Romeo - emphasis on driving experience

Lancia - luxury line

Needless to say, that was years ago. Lancia is almost dead and burried, Alfa finally has the Guila as a successor to the General Motors 159. They could really use some success.

This sounds so much like "let's get Alfa on the news!!" rather than anything serious.

would make more sense to go endurance racing, the trope is of unreliability of alfa's, so why not tackle that by winning le mans and wec

This is to distract from the yearly 'VAG to F1' rumourmill.

Alfa Romeo should buy Dallara and rename it.

They would get instant world wide exposure considering the number of series the chassis is used.

And, sadly, many would not know that the merits belonged to someone else and not Alfa.

NO: Dallara is one of the most accomplished constructors in racing cars with a huge history, it should never fall in hand of a commercial car manufacturer

Dallara is much more into chassis construction and has not such strong links as for what brand of engine to be used in their cars then Ferrari had. So I think the comparison with Ferrari and Dallara not being very appropriate.....

Other striking excample of how much difference there is between Ferrari and Dallara:

The cars that were branded Ferrari 333SP of the late '90s was branded a Ferrari though it were Dallara built chassis fitted with Ferrari V12s....
