Jack, we ( girlfriend and myself) will be there both days - so a meetup would be great !
I have been there last year - the weather did play a big part in making it a great weekend. Hope his Lordship does have the same goodwill up there this year !
It was good being able to walk around with almost no crowding, just at lunchtime some waiting at the food vendors.
Saturday evening entertainment was also very good, but long queus there if you wanted to get food !
Races have been great and mostly very entertaining, I also did like the Group 1b Touring cars, which are not usually in Goodwoods time slot.
The "demonstrations" have been hindered by some slow cars, the pace cars did drive fast(ish) but even then came to lap the slowest cars in the group - and no overtaking allowed. Hope this will be better this year.
Ralf

There are a number of locations under cover, but of course Lord March will have had a word upstairs to ensure the same weather as last year (I HOPE !!!)

No blue jeans ; of course nobody wore such things back in the day .-apart from me and just about everybody else I saw at race meetings . Ties and cravats-so it's a Terry Thomas tribute day, right ?

IIRC it was only the toffs who donned bowtie & blazer, whist the hoi polloi dressed like tramps. Jenks would probably be escorted from the premises if he turned up at Goodwood later this month....
PS I think it was Roy Salvadori who said there was no such thing as "the good old days". Lord March is trying to recreate something that never existed in the first place.......

A genuine recreation might involve awful food , zero facilities apart from canvas latrines , a couple of serious injuries, a fire or two and some appallingly badly dressed people . Good luck to them at Goodwood , I am sure it will be a great day out but let's not pretend it replicates anything other than its previous recreations of history. And I am now far too old to be told how to dress by anybody .......

Well, Monaco has one big advantage - being a leech on the civilized world so that it doesn't charge taxes for things the rest of us have to pay for - and one big disadvantage - it's a much more expensive shlep from sunny Brum.
Although I quite fancy the Historique for next year.

How about the Pau Historique as an alternative? They certainly pay their taxes there and you get a ramp leading up to the Casino and around the town racing. You don't get the sea, but the Pyrenees aren't a bad substitute.

John, I like the first part of your post. Some time ago, Ian Senior suggested a club-type revival at Rufforth with similar facilities available.
I genuinely believe a late-sixties / early-seventies clubbie would be very well received, not necessarily at the coldest circuit I have ever been to, but somewhere like Cadwell Park maybe?

Well, much as I love Cadwell, the UK's best circuit for club and historic racing, Croft is the obvious choice .It's in Yorkshire, it's airfield based and bloody cold most of the year . I am lucky enough to have seen Hunt and Pace in F3 there and , more recently , Raikkonen and Hamilton win in F Renault. Helpfully, August's nostalgia meeting is already in the calendar. Lots of dressing up, but dressing down is just fine too. No champagne bar, nor even a house system (cripes , what fun we had in the dorm ,,) but good racing , friendly people and an access all areas approach in the paddock . See you there .

Has anyone attended the Castle Combe Autumn Classic? I was thinking of going this year, it sounds good and relaxed, but I gather they're suffering from noise restrictions due to local opposition.

Last year's event was excellent. As you say, the atmosphere was relaxed and informal and there was some good racing plus a fine selection of interesting cars to look at on the various club stands. This year there'll be an extra bonus of a V16 BRM doing a few display laps. Thoroughly recommended.Has anyone attended the Castle Combe Autumn Classic? I was thinking of going this year, it sounds good and relaxed, but I gather they're suffering from noise restrictions due to local opposition.

The noise issues have been around for a while; however, the circuit has managed to work around these for a little while. It probably means that the likelihood of the circuit holding, say, a Derek Bell Trophy race are minimal.
In terms of the Autumn Classic, I'd agree that it is a good meeting with a combination of races that don't normally feature at other historic meetings, which gives the meeting a certain appeal. Furthermore, it is nice and relaxed along the same lines as Croft's excellent Nostalgia meeting.

I don't think the ACM ticket prices for the Historique are subsidised by "the leech" to such an extent that they are 16% of the cost of a Goodwood two day ticket!.
By the way, not everyone at Goodwood travels from Birmingham - it costs me less to fly to Nice and use the train rather than flying to Gatwick and having to have a hire car for 3 days.
Don't forget that at Monaco the competitors are paying a rather substantial entry fee which they don't pay at Goodwood.
But Goodwood does have rather more obvious corporate sponsorship as well as the public's money.

I didn't see a thread on this, so I am wondering if there is interest in a TNF meet-up at Goodwood. I was not at last year's MM, so am pretty much in the dark as to what the weekend holds.
Please feel free to post your impressions and suggestions.
Thanks, and I hope to see you there.
Jack.
Jack, amongst all of the subsequent chatter I didn't confirm that I'd be there. I will - both days, but have no idea how to recognise fellow TNF'ers. Are there badges by any chance? If so how are they obtained? I only came across the forum 2-3 years ago.

”...intended to be both stylish and relaxed, an informal yet smart event, with everyone expected to respect a dress code accordingly. Gentlemen will be required to wear jackets and either a tie, cravat or polo-necked sweater at the event. Ladies are also encouraged to wear smart clothing. Blue jeans, t-shirts, low cut or revealing tops, shorts, short skirts, flip-flops, sportswear, baseball caps and heavily branded clothing are strongly discouraged, as are costume or fancy dress. “
It was a great event last year.
Well, for me that means my old parka with the smelly rabbit fur round the hood, and blue jeans, of course. Should be acceptable since I don't claim to be a gentleman...

Thanks, Barrry. Very kind of you.
Having not been to last year's MM I don't know the lay of the land, so I can't suggest a meeting place as we used to do for Revival. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Jack.
Jack - I have your mobile number you did send me some time ago - I will get in contact if there are no further arrangements.
We could meet near the assembly area, for example.
Ralf
PS And thanks to Barry I will also get a TNF badge to wear !

That is interesting, Peter, because at Race Retro I was talking with a chap on the historic F.3 stand and he gave me the impression that entering at Goodwood cost quite a lot of money.
It's possible they charge for the Member's Meeting but the Revival & Festival of Greed are "free".
However the local's rate for hospitality is so extortionate ("I only rent out my purpose built b&b wing for the occasional event at Goodwood" etc.) that it is eye-wateringly expensive to stay in the area (for spectators as well).
The length of time the car is expected to be there (pref. from Wednesday till Sunday) is far longer than most events with associated costs.
The driver/entrant & 1 other benefit from free food, but those with mechanics/hangers on etc. end up paying for rather expensive catering etc.
So the direct costs might appear low but the indirect ones can be massive.
At Monaco entrants are offered some good deals - we stayed in one of the most famous hotels in the world for a price that was similar to someone's spare room at Goodwood (and the bath towels, robes, slippers etc are still serving us well)!
But the entry fee would cover a whole years worth of events in some series!

There is due to be a two lap handicap sprint between Anthony Davidson in a modern F1 Mercedes AMG (don't know if it's last years V6 or a V8), Karl Wendlinger in a 300SEL 6.3 and Jochen Mass in a new Mercedes AMG GT. I think the idea is that they cross the finishing line together. Anyone like to speculate how long Ant will have to wait on the start line after the others have gone?

I only needed the medallion last year - no idea about the parking pass, though. I only have been passenger in a friend´s car...
Ralf
Posted 12 March 2015 - 08:10
Does anyone know what should be in the ticket packet? All I received were two medallions and two grandstand passes; no paper entry tickets, parking pass or etc. that I am accustomed to receiving for Revival. Should I be concerned that I may may be missing some necessary credentials?
The medallions are your entry passes, Jack. Parking is on a straightforward first come first served basis, and that's about all you need (apart from the Grandstand Tickets which you've bought). There is special parking on the Lavant Straight at extra cost, I believe and there is a cut-off date of manufacture/registration; the vehicles need to pre-date it.
I've just opted for ordinary entry (both days) and I bought a Programme Voucher too.
I received my TNF badge from Barry the other day, so will be sporting that too. I'm not sure whether I'll add my GRRC and GAC badges though, because:
a) The total weight might make me walk around in circles
b) My decorations might resemble those of a General in some minor Republic

Sounds similar to one done at Silverstone a few years back.....DC was in the McLaren [can't remember which F1 model] that started last....1st car to start was a Mercedes A-Class [I think......others will correct me as I'm probably wrong], can't remember the 2nd car....the film showed DC in civvies when both the other cars had started...he changed into overalls then got into his F1 car before getting it started...and he still beat the others over 1 lap, just.....

I recall a Senna/McLaren video from the late 80s or very early 90s when a road car, a gt car and the MP4something were matched around Silverstone. The difference in lap times and distances were quite astounding, especially when you saw just how far round the family saloon went before the F1 car set off, and beat it

If recent meetings are anything to go by, there should be live internet coverage and at the last Revival, there was a slightly delayed "live" stream on You Tube

This was it.....I was wrong about DC being in civvies, he waited till both other cars had started before putting his helmet on then getting strapped into the car
