We all have a consesus that Merc is ahead by quite some margin. But whats the situation behind their backs? Williams still best of the rest like last year? Perhaps Ferrari with their gigantic step forward? Maybe Red Bull stil hiding their hand?

Or will McLaren prove to be strong when they finally sort their gremlins?

Williams, then Ferrari. Red Bull are trailing, their engine is really hurting them. I would be surprised if Ricciardo can achieve the same amount of points as last year,

I think Williams but McLaren has a chance to be the second fastest team later in the season if they can solve their problems.

nah because Ferrari fans aren't either right?  :p

I think Williams for sure right now. They are just a smidgen ahead of RedBull and Ferrari.

The question is who is the second best team right now.  It's a toss up between Williams and Ferrari, I've gone for Ferrari, just a hunch really.  I think Red Bull are hampered by the worst engine, bad relationship with Renault, the loss of Prodromou and the stepping back of Newey and having the least experienced driver line-up.  For McLaren, it all depends on Honda - if the engine turns out to be as powerful as promised, then, once reliable, I feel Macca may well be the second best team later in the year.

Considering he took three wins most would be surprised.

Williams are second but I'm not sure about third. Red Bull haven't shown their hands yet.

I think Redbull.

They will have an engine closer to Mercedes this year and their chassis should be better than Williams.

If you're going to have Mclaren in the list, the other constructors should be too.

Don't be biased now.

Williams, for me.

Why? Do you think Force India or Toro Rosso are going to be second best?

No, for the same reason Mclaren won't be.

In the short term, Williams.
Over a season, could be one of several.

Well, heck as it meant much being second best on the second to last day of testing, but I voted Ferrari because of the positive attention they have drawn.

But yeah, waiting for FP3 :-)

Probably Williams, but I don't believe there is much between them and Ferrari. I'm gonna guess Ferrari might be ahead at Melbourne, too - people were reporting from trackside that Wiliams handles the quicker corners better than Ferrari, there's not many of them in Melbourne.

Red Bull should be thereabouts in this pack as well but I'm not terribly impressed by them yet, and would give slight favouritism towards Williams over them, too.

I'd give RB a slight edge at this stage as I believe they'll have good tyre management followed by Williams and Ferrari which seem more or less equal from the limited data we can gather. Hamilton vs. Rosberg and some nice fights for the last place on the podium could be the theme of the season.

Williams. Just ahead of Red Bull, who are just ahead of Ferrari.

It will change a lot through the season though depending on the track. McLaren may challenge in the second half.

Williams looks like they still have a touch in hand over Ferrari.

Red Bull... something just doesn't feel right. If they had half a chance I reckon Horner would be screaming it from the rooftops, yet he has been uncharacteristically quiet.

Just guessing because testing form has no bearing on anything.

I think williams should be ahead of red bull because the merc is just better and that williams have enough good people pulling together to now fight with the big teams.
red bull have always built excellent chassis, but they don't seem to be playing well with renault at the moment. Seems strange considering their long relationship.
so chassis wise I think williams isn't on part with redbul.
Ferrari were not quick enough and with their team dynamic not working, I see them fighting the mid field for the lower points paying positions

Think Ferrari will steal it in Oz. Not that the car is necessarily the outright second fastest, just reckon our drivers are better and may be worth the difference.

Neck and neck between Williams and Ferrari, but Ferrari have a much more solid driver pairing, so I'd lean their way.  Crystal ball is very hazy re Red Bull.

I think Bottas is definitely as good if not better than the Ferrari drivers.

If we're going by Australia then its Red Bull without a doubt, its a track not as dependant on engine power.

Red Bull are always quite low key in testing and people have a tendency to underrate them.

They could well be right up there in Australia.

I think Bottas is definitely as good if not better than the Ferrari drivers.

I don't know about that.

Why? He hasn't proven to be quicker than his teammate, someone who many people said shouldn't be in F1 anymore.

My guess in the order behind the Merc: Williams > Red Bull > Ferrari

I have to say in my opinion, despite only 1 day running the Force India looked a pretty good car - shame they haven't had as many days as the others to tune the set-up etc as it was looking quite solid out on track. I'm not even going to hazard a guess as to where McLaren fit - they need to get the car working right first.

Where is the option for Lotus ?

.
Lotus need to do something to make their car more driveable, it looked appalling, in direction changes and under braking - it was just all over the place, the drivers are going to earn their money this year.

It very much looks like Williams but I tend to concur with the view that McLaren will eventually occupy that space as the season drags on.

What's this optimism about McLaren based on exactly? No way they will be able to be second best some time this season. The car hasn't been good since 2012 and in recent years they haven't shown capable of developing well during the season. Take into account that the Honda engine isn't very good, I don't share the optimism at all.
