So sad news, one of the great characters of a great period, car-manufacturer, team-manager, racing-driver, RIP

He was a straight-talking, talented man. It never quite worked out for him, but it's a tough business building cars, especially if you want to make money out of it.

The Mantis - one of the most astonishing looking racing cars I can recall.  Looked years ahead of its time, like it was from Thunderbirds.

RIP.

Very brief obituary piece about Jem on BBC West's 'Points West' tonight, including a clip from a 1995 interview. About 20 minutes in, if anyone wants to see it when it's on iPlayer.

Sad to hear. In the eighties I was restoring a Marcos for racing and phoned the factory for information and to order parts. After a long discussion with the very knowledgeable person who answered the phone I asked if he was Jem Marsh-"yes" he said " I can't get anyone else in here to answer the phone!"

As a schoolboy, in 1965, I wrote to Marcos asking for a brochure, mentioning my age and unlikeliness of being any kind of prospective customer for a while. By return I received all the available publicity info and a two-page hand-written letter from the boss.

Nuff said.

My user name says it all - but what a sad first post.

RiP indeed Jem.  You created cars that even now, 50 years after the 1964 debut of the classic shape, people still admire and yet still don't recognise.  At least those of us with long legs knew we'd fit.

Twenty-four years of Marcos ownership (and racing) and still a thrill to drive. What a legacy.

Just came back from Jem's memorial service, Holy Trinity Bradford on Avon sure needs a sound engineer, especially for us guys who have spent the last fifty years around unsilenced engines.

Major turn out to see the old boy off.

I sat underneath the memorial on the south wall to the eponymous Colonel Shrapnel -curiously apt perhaps......
