Roberto Merhi is confirmed as second Manor F1 driver, but just for the first round. When were drivers signed just for a the first or first few races and not for a whole season.

Senna was on a race-to-race-contract with McLaren in 1993.

Then we had Klien and Liuzzi who should both drive the second Red Bull F1 seat.

More examples?

It used to happen toward the back of the grid quite a lot in the 1980s and 1990s.

Martin Brundle and Aguri Suzuki were signed on a seat-sharing arrangement in the second Ligier in 1995.

Brundle/Suzuki in 95 for Ligier. Does Blundell from the same season count? Test-driver for McL, then supposed to only to race 1 and 2 to allow McLaren to get Mansell in the car. Then ending up driving the rest of the season after race 4.

Michael Andretti and Mika Hakkinen shared a McLaren in 1993. Didn't end well for one of them.

Not really the same thing, Mika was the test driver and only ended up racing because Andretti got himself sacked.

Didn't Fisichella only do a partial season for Minardi in '96? Not sure of the circumstances though.

I am not sure. Wasn't it the meaning they would swap places anyhow? I could be mistaken...

Anyway, I know another double-act: Corrado en Theo Fabi at Brabham.

Domenico Schiattarella had a contract for the first half of the 1995 season with Simtek, with Hideki Noda due to take over later on, but the team went under before this point.

I believe that Roland Ratzenberger's contract with the team in 1994 was also only for part of the season.

Yes: Tarso Marques replaced him for his "local" races in Brazil and Argentina, then Giovanni Lavaggi bought the seat permanently from Germany onwards.

Isn't a team only allowed to use a maximum of four drivers across a whole season? So my guess is Merhi will still drive the majority of the races.

Mansell 94. Only contracted where CART schedule allowed wasn't he?

No it wasn't a seat sharing deal, Andretti was supposed to do the full season but he never got to grips with F1 so McLaren sacked him after 13 races and put the test driver (Hakk) in for the last three.

Bit off-topic, but I can imagine that being the done to fill in for Magnussen, or even in anticipation of Giedo vd Garde.

That's such a stupid rule, I'm fine with teams like Manor putting one off local drivers in or having two drivers seat-share or whatever if it means they don't go bankrupt.

I highly doubt Merhi will do the full season as he doesn't have the one thing manor really need; $$$$. I hope he does more races than just Australia though.

Last year they could get away with running a few different drivers just for the bucks. Next year they'll need to have a decent CV to drive an F1 car

Brabham had the Fabi brothers share the monkey seat in 1984 as Teo was busy in Indycar.

Wasn't Kobayashi signed on a race-by-race basis with Caterham last year?

Mark Webber's Minardi deal was initially only for the first few races of 2002 but then he grabbed their best result in a decade straight out of the gate and the rest is history.

Wasn't Barrichello signing new contract with Brawn each race of 2009 season?

Stefan Johansson did the first race of 1985 in place of Stefan Bellof, who was suspended over a contract dispute. There's a thread about it here.
