just to be clear these forums don't allow spell checkers in browsers to work, correct?

My Firefox does it fine. I'll try to find where I enabled it.
eta:
I'm not finding a setting here.
In Firefox go to tools>options>advanced>general>browsing>check my spelling. A more savvy nerd can probably tell you the shortcut for that.
In Opera rightclick in a text field for spellchecker options

Try the right click in the reply box and checkmark it? Mine was just doing it globally or I've long forgotten having done that step.

yep, done all those things. like i said, this is exclusively an autosport forums issue. spell check works ok on all other forums, etc. in fact, it works in private messages on this very forum. if i were to send you a private message through this forums software it does offer the choice of spell correcting my text.

Here is how things work on Firefox (36.0.1) on my system.
When I reply to a topic, and the extended editor is on, initially spell checker is off. As soon as I type the first word, click with the mouse on the word, spell-checker is being turned on automagically. Same effect can be achieved by toggling into the simple text editor (first icon top left in the editor bar), and toggling back..
While I type this, 2 words have been highlighted, so things work for me.
EDIT: When I edit my message, spell checking starts as soon as the editor pane is gaining focus.

Yeah, I think the wee toggle switch that doesn't even have a label is the source of much grief around here.
