Domination does very few people any good other than the team dominating.

The sport suffers, thought F1 can just about withstand anything.

I am super impressed with Carlos, going to be supporting him strongly this year whish is weird as I cant stand Spanish domination in bike racing, but from some of the interviews I ahve watched so far he seems a humble and decent kid.  And in my eyes should have got this shout last year instead of the Russian

If Hamilton and Rosberg can make a season long fight of it again, I don't think the sport will suffer too badly - this isn't a 2011 or 2013 level of domination by one driver. Especially as this being the second season of new regs, the reliability ought to be less a factor. And if Williams and Ferrari are really as close as qualifying made them look then hopefully we're in for a good fight whatever happens, especially if Red Bull can up their game and join in.

Mercedes are on an another level completely. Last year they won the most GP's in a season (I accept that this is only because the race calendar is longer), but this year they could even beat that dominance. This could be one if not THE most dominant car in history in terms of results and performance. Move over '88 McLaren, 02/04 Ferrari, and 14 Merc, there is a new kid on the block.

They've improved by a tenth or two at best and the tifosi are going wild. Same old mediocre Ferrari. There will be no titles there in the near future. They are still miles away from Merc. Alonso had nothing to lose by jumping ship.

A tenth or two ? Are you serious ?

Ferrari improve 8 tenths to Mercedes. They have made the biggest recovery from all the team. Last year, Ferrari was 1.8 seconds slower, now 1 second. The car is now the second best and you called it mediocre, what a joke.

Mediocre is the showing by Mclaren Honda right now, and nothing suggest that they will be at Ferrari and Williams level in the future. So before talking about fighting with Mercedes, it would be better if they can show they can fight with Lotus and Toro Rosso.

F1 will need to do something about this competitive order if Mercedes are again a second ahead. We can't have this.

why not?

Dominance comes and goes, relax guys. F1 survived Schumacher and Vettel winning 9 of 14 WDCs.

Its urgent needs are to sort out the money and cost issues.

True. But it doesn't make the situation right now less boring.

Back on topic... The fight for 3rd was actually pretty interesting. Those 4 Williams and Ferrari drivers are REALLY close. Here's hoping it's as close tomorrow!

No, its 1.4 seconds. And Lewis didnt nail his lap completely. On top of it, this is only the first race. That gap could grow when Mercedes bring back the R2-unit monkey seat.

And that's at Australia where the aero dominance really isn't shown off (also absolutely no aero upgrades since last test, with a good track record last year of aero upgrades actually working).  The gap will be even larger at the European tracks.  You have been warned

When did I say that the cars need to be technically the same? I just prefer seasons like 2007 or 2008 to seasons like this.

They've actual had an aerodynamic downgrade having removed the monkey seat.  Perhaps the car didn't have enough front end aero to balance it.

After last season, Hamilton promised to improve his qualifying performance. Rosberg promised to improve his race performance.

To anyone saying Hamilton already has the title in the bag: no points are given yet.

Yes, but it is a foregone conclusion that it is only those two, unless something drastic happens, to shrink Mercedes advantage.

For anyone who likes to see a fight for the championship and doesn't think that watching "thrilling" battles for 7th place is the same as watching battles for victory.

I couldn't give a **** about either Hamilton or Rosberg. I'd just like to see a competitive field.

Field was very competitive when Vettel won his 4, but that didn't stop people from whinging.

The field was much closer these years - Mercedes has a McLaren/Williams advance. Even if you look back at the Schumacher day, Montoya, Raikkonen all the could have sneaked a pole or a win on merit. Dan needed Mercedes to skrew themselves three times to win, people should look back at those Vettel years, when we had fights till the end - this gap is just too big for F1 these days

The other teams/suppliers should have done a better job, This advantage isn't some aero voodoo or illegal flexible wings, it's what F1 should be an excellent power unit and chassis in harmony.

Looks like the W05/W06 hybrids were money (a lot) well spent... I'm enjoying the development of this new formula. They sound amazing now.

Bottas taken ill. Via @OskariSaari, Claire Williams could not with certainty promise that he would be in a condition to race tomorrow.

I hope he's ok. :(

Alonso could replace him?

He might be fit to drive a Williams.

:)

Wow, how did you calculate that? They are over 4 seconds faster than last year at melbourne, and moved from middlefield to top 3.

They've moved 2 tenths closer to merc. Be still my beating heart

Jennie Gow tweeted that Bottas won't race, is she a reliable person?

There's not that much to be interested in when that advantage is effectively locked in.
