I've seen a b-w picture of a Formula Atlantic race held at Brands Hatch, year 1976.

Starting from the pole-position was the Radio Luxembourg #208 Surtees TS15 (presumably yellow) of Steve Carvill, and alongside him was the late Jim Crawford's Chevron B29. Winner of the race was Tony Trimmer in a Lola T360 (with unusual race number 958 !!!  ), who started from the very last row. Second finished Cyd Williams in the Sana RD9, and third Jeremy Rossiter in another Chevron.

I did not know Steve Carvill. No news about his racing career. Think the Radio Luxembourg team for which he raced, was a top-level (former Formula 5000) squad, even in Formula Atlantic.

How good was Steve Carvill?

Mate of Peter Wardle's, the latter organised Indylantic that year.

I can't add anything about Steve Carvill but I seem to remember reading in Motoring News that Tony Trimmer's car was numbered 95.8, this being the radio frequency of his sponsors. The timekeepers were not amused and refused to time his qualifying lap. Each driver did a single timed qualifying lap, this being one of the gimmicks introduced in the UK Formula Atlantic series for 1976. I believe that the series was renamed "Indylantic" or something equally stupid.

That would make his sponsor Capital Radio.

And yes, it's pretty sad that I remember that!

The Peter Wardle connection was certainly true. I think he was only about 18 years old & I think the Surtees was Wardle's.After the short lived Indylantic thing I don't remember seeing him again.

That age would fit with the information in his LinkedIn profile, which has him attending King's College School at Wimbledon until 1975. These days he's a ForEx trader based in Egham. Here's a link to the profile, though I suspect you have to be registered at LinkedIn to read it:

Seems to be Stephen L Carvill, birth registered in Kensington 2nd quarter of 1958. Son of Angela M (née Field) and Brian M Carvill, who married in Westminster in 1955. Agreed on him currently living in Egham, although he seems to have moved around a bit recently!

I think he worked as Peter Wardle's mechanic before taking to the track himself. Wardle's Surtees carried the signwriting which read "Paint, plod and polish - Steve"

Could fit, Alan. There's a DueDil record for him as a director of a dissolved company, which also describes him as an engineer.

According to dellam.com: Stephen Louis Carvill, b. 19 April 1958.
So he raced at age 17.
