Kenny Brack at Texas springs to mind instantly. That anyone can survive a 200g impact is just nuts.

That one amazed me. Not really spectacular, but impressive un a way.

No footage of it since it happened at night but Rocky's crash at Le Mans 2011 deserves a mention here.
There was some partial footage from in-car and the fixed night-time cameras:

There was this one where one of the Williams (Mansell or Patrese?) did a Cobra maneuver after hitting the rear of a car in front. That was pretty nuts too.
Patrese tries to get a tow behind Berger, not realizing that Berger was about to slow down to the enter pit lane...

If the topic had been The most brutal and gruesome and sickening crash, I would have mentioned Greg Moore at Fontana. I remember it like it was yesterday.

The '73 British GP meeting had 2 spectacular crashes....the 1st in the BTCC race between Dave Brodie [Capri], Dave Matthews [Escort] and Gavin Booth [Mini].....I was a speccie and that happened right in front of me....then a few hours later, the Jody Scheckter triggered incident after lap 1 at Woodcote & the Start / Finish straight....

The crash involving David Regan and David Reutimann in 2011 is one of several major NASCAR crashes at Watkins Glen in recent years. Have not been a fan of many of the rules changes but no doubting the safety of the cars after incidents like this....

Any crash by Kubica really.. when he crashes, he usually crashes pretty hard.

S...t did the driver make it?
The driver was Peter Dumbreck, he was fine, just a bit shaken up.

Kevin Cogan's crash in the 1989 Indy 500 was pretty spectacular.

A perfectly honourable standpoint, but I can't reconcile it with your final point - why do you keep seeing Smiley's crash then?
I occasionally stumble upon it on Youtube or something. I think a lot of racing fans, particularly people like me from the younger generation who rarely if ever have seen truly serious accidents live, have watched the scary accidents from the past out of curiosity more than anything else, not for "enjoyment".

Not sure if spectacular is the best description for it, but the most haunting accident I've seen that affected me the most was:
Tom Pryce at Kyalami 1977
Marshalling controls have come a long way since then thank god.

Gordon Smiley's tragic accident at Indianapolis in 1982. I don't remember ever seeing an impact as hard as that.

He had another big one, in the DTM, in 2004:

Many great finds. Thanks guys. Didn't see some of these crashes before. How the heck did the Mercedes Le Mans one happen?
Off the top of my head, I remember Kubica's at Montreal and I think 2000 Monza accident?

Mark Webber's vault in Valencia 2010 is difficult to beat, no?
No.
This is a terrible thing to discuss.
It's probably the tragic crash in Monza. If not in Le Mans.
The 1928 race was to be a horrific tragedy, and racing at Monza ceased for 3 years. Italian Emilio Materassi crashed his Talbot opposite the pits during that year's race, killing himself and 27 spectators.
As the somersaulting remains of the 300 SLR decelerated, the rear-mounted fuel tank ruptured. The ensuing fuel fire raised the temperature of the remaining Elektron bodywork past its ignition temperature, which was lower than other metal alloys due to its high magnesium content. The alloy burst into white-hot flames, sending searing embers onto the track and into the crowd. Rescue workers, totally unfamiliar with magnesium fires, poured water on the inferno, greatly intensifying the fire. As a result, the car burned for several hours. Official accounts put the death total at 84 (83 spectators plus Levegh), either by flying debris or from the fire, with a further 120 injured.

Indeed, the intention was to trust every member's good taste and decency.

And spectacular is subjective. Now, I can't understand accidents where people get crippled for life, or killed would be "spectacular". However, for me, crashes like Bodine and McClure is spectacular, it is a sense of "how on earth did they survive THAT".

Wasn't there another one there similar to this one in the last year or two?
