Has anything like this happened at other venues as a result of natural causes?

This afternoon I went for groceries... I have a push-bike with a big loading crate (a so-called 'bakfiets'). I had to crash myself lightly against a small pillar not be blown over. The wind took one of my empty-shopping bags of canvas and it took it about seventy to hundred meters high in the air. I never have seen such a thing. Something like that must have passed Silverstone...

Trying to cycle here (Edinburgh) has been impossible.
Apparently there's something funny happening to the jetstream causing us to get horrible winds at the moment.
Not the most intutitve interface, but have a look at http://earth.nullschool.net/ (click on the word earth bottom left, and remember they consider height as dropping air pressure hpa) for an idea about what is going on at different air levels.
