Immediately recognizable, of course, is Stirling Moss, front and center. Off his left shoulder is Innes Ireland. Two to the right of Innes, hands clasped under his chin, is Olivier Gendebien. I would wager that the lady partially out of the picture with the plaid slacks is Denise McCluggage.

You skipped right by Jimmy (in hat!) next to Innes

As fer312t indicates, could be the 1962 Daytona 3 hour.  I doubt if it is the 1961 GP Belgium.  Didn't quite look like Jim Clark in the hat, but maybe it is.  Denise McCluggage apparently raced in the Formula Junior race at Daytona.

Don't recognize anyone apart from Stirling, Innes and Olivier, so it must be an American sports car race. :smoking:

Jimmy in the hat, very close beside Innes.

Daytona Feb 11th 1962. JC raced an Elite, led the race, but  finished 4th after battery failure.

You guys are very close this was the 1962 Daytona 3 hour race. Art Huttinger is in the picture, as is Doug Theim in hat. That is Jimmy Clark and Innes and Olivier and Denise barely visable. Everyone knows Stirling.

I agree with Vince that the picture of Jimmy Clark in the hat doesn't look like him, Louis who loaned the Forum this picture say it is.

We have Louis Galanos to thank for this picture from his collection.

Thought it was Alan Stacey at first rather than Jimmy

The facial expressions are interesting. Suggestive of a particularly serious point being made. Stirl doesn't look best pleased at all. Perhaps they were being informed that crumpet was not allowed in the pits or paddock.

Peter,

Your information about Jimmy Clark's performance in the 1962 3-hour Daytona Continental is a little exaggerated. He never ran in the top twenty and finished 29th overall in the Peter Berry Lotus Elite. He did lose time during his pit stop when his engine stalled and refused to start again.

Jerry,

Thank you for that info.

My original post should have been clearer, insofar as JC finished 4th IN CLASS, and 29th. overall as you correctly point out.

Peter.

This leaves the driver in the foreground to be identified. He looks rather European [German?] but going over the list of 50 participants, only a few drivers stand out as hard to ID due to lack of coverage in period:

US: Bob Keyes, Milo Vega [of the cigar family], Pat Corrigan, Pete DaCosta and Herb Swan

European: Guido Lollobrigida [if it is him, he sure looks different from Gina]

All other drivers are well known, so the unknown must be in this select group.

Certainly looks like JC in the hat to me. His closeness to Ireland suggests to me this could be no later than 1961 as I believe their relationship became very frosty after Chapman sacked Ireland at the end of 61.

It was established earlier that this was taken at Daytona in February, 1962, and that it is Clark.

As Tom and various other people mentioned already, the photo was definitely taken at the drivers meeting before the Feb 11, 1962 Daytona 3 Hours. So perhaps Innes' feelings toward Jimmy weren't that antagonistic yet. Clark's successful 1962 Formula One season still had to unfold and at Daytona Ireland was in the faster car [Rob Walker's 250GT entered by UDT Laystall].

As for the unidentified driver and looking at the final results, Corvette driver Jack Knab might qualify as well. However, with Denise McCluggage in civvies and camera [she did participate in the earlier Formula Junior race with an OSCA], it is possible the driver up front was a leftover from the FJ events, especially since he is in civilian clothes as well.

Lots of characters in those, whose faces are unfamiliar:

US: Ike Maxwell, Reed Rollo, Mac Knight, Ray Colot, M.W. Yunker

Venezuela: Mauro Brenna

I am sure you are right.  That simpy doesn't look like Clark.  And a shy Scots farmer would never wear a hat like that!  See this picture of Pedro - the resemblance is clear surely?

I think it is Clark. I've seen pictures of him wearing that sort of jumper. He also had a darkly 'saturnine' look about him.
