Life's a beach.

In some cases, it's a long one also.

Welcome to the first ever e-Prix of Long Beach, going green in about 3 days in the fantastic scenery of California.
We arrive in this fabolous place after a classic e-Prix of Miami, where race favourites Sam Bird and Jean-Eric Vergne faced dramas while Nicolas Prost, Daniel Abt and the rookie (a bit odd to say!) Scott Speed managed to get into the front of the pack and fought hard for the victory till the last lap.

Nicolas Prost took the race win in style, moving into the inside of Abt's ABT (weird enough) and defending cleanly from the hurricane Speed, who completed his monter debut performance in P2.

After 5 of 11 races (still a long way to go!) , championship's standings now looks like this!

After 3 weeks stop, now it's time for the first proper street circuit to host a Formula E Race. It's Long Beach, a place where racing cars competed since the last 40 years. From F1 to CART and Indy Car, history was made on the California's beaches.
Formula E will use a slighty shorter version of the traditional one, missing the Acquarium way part.

Well done, and once again looking forward to this.  I honestly admit, I am looking forward to Formula E races more than Formula 1 races these days... :p

I'm sure there will be the usual last minute driver change, though!

It's much shorter than the F1 or Indycar layouts...the last few corners are about the only interesting parts they left.

Robert Downey Jr.'s birthday party

:well:

How sad is that?

Hope the folks here that attend have a great time .

well, at least Virgin tivo gets used for the 1st time since the Malyasia e prix (due to the fact its the other way round this time, too late for me) (plus i had lack of Virgin for 3 months and a small bit). And as per normal with these street races i added extra time just in case of a track blockage (we had none of those yet)

Was there anything said about why Vergne went from challenging for the win to going backwards completely after the pitstops?

Obviously a great place to showcase the series but I also think this may put the speed of these cars into perspective, I mean how slow Formula E are for open-wheel racing cars. OK, it's a different track configuration to IndyCar and different weekend but people still have IndyCar in their mind or FE in two weeks when IndyCar is racing on the same streets.

It will be intresting to see how these cars stack-up against the Indy cars. The speed might not be high, but I think the quality of racing is getting better and better (and there are no wing parts to get destroyed after every yellow flag :p). I want to see either Bird win to put pressure at the top or a surprise win from someone like Speed/Heindfield would be great as well.

Anybody know how FE is doing on the TV rating? The U.S. Indycar viewership numbers last weekend were laughable.

From what little information is availble, it seem that there was a +700k viewership for the first race and than it dropped at around 150k. However, no one seems to take into consideration that the races are broadcaster for free on the internet. Also, the stats seem to be only availble for the first three races. There's also an article with a interview with the Agag and he seems pretty optimist with the brand value and general intrest shown by sponsors.

Track looks insane, can't wait to see it tomorrow. I love Formula E, I hate flying, I would gladly pay someone thousands to teleport me there.  Does anyone know if they have ever used this shorter track before?  Would be good to see a video onboard.

Seems a bit steep to me, but since the race is free, I guess they have to make money somehow.

Unfortunately I'll have to miss this one. This Saturday night promises a party where drama will be ****ing had, and I can't miss it. This time the opposite sex wins over racing.

I'll watch it Sunday on youtube or whatever. Have something to go with the BTCC races.

Go Vergne!

What is a 'proper street circuit' ? Long Beach and Monaco shorter versions of existing venues all the other s created specially for this series.maybe we can have a vote for most beautiful circuit?

The proximity to the walls is the only thing that makes these cars even remotely spectacular.

If you can't wait for the German ePrix, then google the Formula E Donington test races. It's not good.

I don't agree, I just watched it. It's still great, the walls do add some speed but without them I didn't see less action or feel it was lacking.

I agree, but there is something kind of alluring about a street only world championship.

I'll be looking forward to this. Long Beach is up there amongst my my all time favourite venues so It'll be nice to see the FE cars somewhere familiar.

It's a shame they had to shorten out the fountain, that would have been a lovely sight

Looks pretty sleek, and good to see sponsors coming on board (although in this case, I guess it's constructor's self-sponsorship).

The China racing car looks better in the rendering than it did at the track.  It had minimal green, with no sponsorship decals on.  It looked  very, very drab.  They started putting decals on in the afternoon.

It was a fun day with beautiful weather and lots of interesting bits.  I'll upload more pictures and words later.

One of the definite highlights was meeting photographer extrordinaire, ShivyF1!

It should be an exciting race and hopefully there is a good crowd to enjoy the show.

Winglet - I love the nuts and bolts attachments. I don't need no stinking aero!

Demo car and Channel 34 (Univision) reporter

Channels 34 and 5 were there with female correspondents. Gail from Channel 5 was super friendly. In the afternoon, she came over at the ABT garage to chat. She is enthusiastic about the racing and the technology, very cool. She could easily be the life of a party.

16403625124_a541ec5a09_z.jpg

Training

The session for the track workers to familiarize them about the safety features of the car.  There are lights in front of the cockpit, red (don't touch the car stupid), green (car is safe to operate), and blue (not used). Additionally, there is a white light above the driver and red lights in the rear that indicate drive status. Solid lights are normal operation (in gear), blinking lights are out of gear and there is another blinking mode that indicates regeneration.  That can be seen during the race.

The headgear direction is the white Formula E hats you see most folks wearing.  As the French trainer said, its for the show.  Its a cool hat and one of the many cool swag items for volunteers.

I thought it was cool.

Press Conference

L-R Andretti, Franchitti, Prost, Speed, Salvador Duran, Orel Servia.  An interesting item during the Q/A before the press conference was that Mr. Agag said that Formula E has received interest from 180 cities to host a race!  I think Formula E has a future.

$1M Car

A gorgeous Croatian built machine. It does run..

16405918473_d5035b8fcf_c.jpg

Special kudos to the driver of the BMW hybrid safety car.  He or She knew how to set up the car perfectly for the 90 degree turn 3 right hander. It was a blast to watch during the shakedown laps.

Am I'm right in thinking free practice starts at 16:15 GMT?

Looking at the Formula E website it looks like it is 16.15 BST

race starts 16.00 local time - and midnight in the UK (BST) and FP1 is 08.15 local time.

Edit - from website (bolding, my own conversion - for central Europe +1hour to UK times):

Nice OP TheGamer

And thanks for reminding me of last year's Indycar race. Fun was had. With the aquarium bypass the track looks a lot like the classic 90s layout (thanks Racingcircuits.net).

I don't agree, I just watched it. It's still great, the walls do add some speed but without them I didn't see less action or feel it was lacking.

Bit like how in motorcycle racing some people can't get enough of 80/125cc bikes racing in huge packs and totally dependent on maintaining corner speed to go fast, and some don't see the point of the silly buzzy insects.

Watching a bit of FP1 I am actually surprised how quick they look around Long Beach...Somehow I was expecting a little slower  :D

That first chicane looks like a crash in the making :D

Edit: And there goes Abt!

The pit arrangement looks pretty unique too. Cross between FE, IndyCar and traditional Le Mans starts at the car swap?

Piquet Jr. tops first practice session, along with Bruno Senna the only men to go under the minute barrier.

Daniel Abt smashed into the wall at T1 putting the session to an early end.

FP2 in 40 mins, at 17.25 UK time!

Thanks for the link to the highlights for the last race. Really enjoyed it.

Would like to sit up and watch the Long Beach race live, but that would be about 4am here. Might stick to the replay :).

Quite enjoying this series. I hope it goes from strength to strength.
