Lads, with my project still ongoing of filming interviews with motorsport people (I have already filmed a few of the Lotus lads), in the next few weeks I'm hoping to shoot an interview with former racer Mike Crabtree. I think we all remember his dice with Martin Thomas and Gerry Marshall around the Palace in 1971! Was just wondering if any of you have any particular memories of the man that I could use to help jog his memory etc.

Have you tried John Watson, the Seven registrar at Historic Lotus Register?

From John Watson:

Mike Crabtree (a super guy) owned several Lotuses including at least one Mk.VI and at least one 7C aka Super Seven Climax. The car being referred to is c/n 471 road Reg. No. XNP 842 which was delivered new to De Coene in March 1959. There is a picture of Mike competing in the car (#51) at Brunton Hill Climb on page 704 of July 1962 issue of the 750MC Bulletin.

By cdh: There was a picture of Seven S1 XNP 842 competing at Firle hillclimb as part of a set on eBay within the last couple of years.  No date but the driver may have been Mike Crabtree (I believe that De Coene was more of a circuit racing man).  I believe that Crabtree owned two Mk VIs, the ex-Mike Anthony, NUF 100, with 1467 MG engine and a wierdly bodied 1172 cc Mk VI, JCH 909.  Questions to MC on his various Lotuses might elicit a few stories...

Dave Armstrong, the Speedex man, sent me a copy of the 750 M.C. article on Brunton. Hence the enquiry.

Firle Hill Climb, BARC S.E./M.G. Car Club (S.E.), 14 July 1963:

Sports Racing Cars up to

1. M.J. Crabtree (Lotus-Climax 7), 26.53 sec

Per Michael Kettlewell:

"The  1,300 c.c. sports-racing class went to

Mike Crabtree's Climax-engined Lotus 7,

which had been ill during practice, with a

time of 26.53 secs."

Autosport, July 19, 1963, Page 103.
