We've all heard the stories from McLaren that you can't win against a constructor with their customer engine, hence why McLaren left Merc and went to Honda.

Is it assumed that customer teams are getting different engine maps/software to the Mercedes team?

If that is the case then that would ensure that the Mercedes customer teams are always a little bit behind the works team.

But given the increase in performance of Ferrari this year, is it possible that Mercedes have provided better mapping/software to Williams in the hope that rather than having red cars biting at their heels, it will be other Mercedes powered cars?

Just an idea maybe worth discussing?

Yes , very possible. Although judging by today's quali speed trap figures it's not as if they need much more power.

Better map/software...maybe. But are they actually going to work well with the Williams package for example? Not necessarily what works well for Mercedes would for others i'd imagine.

Mercedes customer teams will always get the "dross" thats left by that i mean when the engines are made hence  they will have sightly less horses.  As for ecu maps people are living on Cloud Cuckoo Land Merc are not going to spend millions then say sure guys here you go "the very latest maps are yours" get a grip Business is Business.

The real question should have been can the boffins at Williams and others be can they legally "mod" them or tweak and go faster  its all code a he end of the day

It would hardly be a conspiracy for Mercedes to want more Mercedes teams be as close to them as possible to ensure teams like Ferrari and Red Bull score less points. Surely it makes sense for a constructor that also makes engines to do this rather than it being some sort of cover up. Why would they even need to cover it up? and why should they? I'm not a fan of Mercedes or Ferrari and am not keen on Vettel, but was cheering when he broke the status quo. As a constructor that also supplies engines you want the works team to win followed by all your customers no?

I believe Williams run different intercoolers to Mercedes, as well as different fuels and lubricants. Those things would mean the Mercedes mapping wouldn't directly translate anyway.

It's not hurting Merc to have fast Williams cars outqualifying Ferraris...

The engine is definitely the same - homologation and token system make sure of this.

But I doubt the engine mapping is the same though. Plus definitely each one of them has different fixed gear ratios and the way they utilize the energies from MGU-K and MGU-H.,
