What kind of F1 race do you prefer?

Those who follow track field know there is a difference between how a runner strategically runs a race depending on the distance. 400m is about power, 1000m is about tactics also (starting to sprint at the right time compared to your rivals). 10000m is even more tactics and can also involve pace setters who do not finish the race. Taking this comparison to formula 1 which would you prefer a formula 1 race to be like?

I’d rather have something like the 1,000m (although that is a pretty rare event in track & field). I can’t be bothered watching the 10,000m, it’s too long a build-up. The 400, when related to motorsport, would be too much about brute force. Something like a 10 lap race wouldn’t be interesting for me. Not with the current cars anyway.

The whole reason pitstops were invented was so that you could do multiple '400m' sprints.

i really miss the ten tenths stints of the refuelling days. ferocious speed and crazy strategy.

 

each stint in a race should be a qualifying session IMO.

 

erm.. so 400m, i guess, although i have no idea what the OP is on about.

Not to mention dispensable qualy engines  and super soft qualy  tyres optimised just for 1 banzai lap and  with the drivers balls hanging out of the cockpit ..epic.!  :D

When they showed him in quali it might have been (or the race) I had no idea who he was. I still had no idea who he was when he went on the podium. Only found out when my dad told me (I don't really follow track and field but I've still heard of a few people from that area both recently and in years gone by, but never heard of him).

With long distance running (10k or even marathon), there  are two main approaches:

 

1. If you have a reasonable sprint finish, then you run most of the race by just keeping in contact with the front runners so that you can sprint to the line at the end and, hopefully, pass everyone to finish first

2. If you're not so good at sprinting, then you set a fast pace (maybe from the lead) in order to wear out those who do have a sprint.

 

Applying either to current F1 does not work, though. There's not much the correllation between 'saving/using resouces'. The speed difference between the fastest and slowest cars is not that great for the 'sprint finish' idea and, what's more, it's not so easy to pass even if you do have much better pace. As for going out, from the start, to destroy your opponents, first you may be hampered by grid position but more importantly, everyone has the same issues with saving tyres, saving fuel and, again, passing on the track.

 

Now, if passing was easier, if they have one set of tyres to last the whole race, they could use as much fuel as they liked (but there was no re-fuelling, so a thirsty car would have to carry more fuel weight), then there might be some different tactics.

400m is not only about power but about managing your energy and waiting for the right time to push. The poll should have included 100m for the vocal minority of F1 fans who consider the dumbed-down 2004 season to be the greatest of all.

I like the way Nascar  awards points.  Keeps people on their toes and keeps them trying. More like a constant qualifying session. I think it makes the racing more interesting.  Whether that makes the races similar to 400m or whatever I have no idea.
