[Warning: thread may contain fluff, if mods think this inappropriate here, I will move to Paddock Club but wanted a wider audience to be able to participate]

I have seen some marvellous sights and sounds on track since the 1950s.  But there is something I have always wondered about...How would a big Merc go in Bob Jane's hands at Bathurst?  To me, at the time, it was a smile-on-your-face exciting prospect...

So, M-100 engine and 300SEL 6.3, creating the world's fastest four-door sedan and/or the introduction of the "W116" chassis, a larger 6.9 liter version of M-100 was installed in the Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9.

I always thought their mountain climbing ability, good top speed and reliability might have produced a surprising result. Brakes might have been another matter though.

[PS Not looking for an eligibility lecture...this is just about "scenes we'd like to see", with apologies to Mad Magazine]

J.M.Fangio driving [with short-sleeved shirt] M.B. W154 down 'The Esses' at Bathurst.

Edit:- Sorry Mick, I now see that I mis-read the Title. That is what I would have liked to have seen.

I assume (always dangerous) that JMF was on a demo lap, if so, its all good...you would have liked to see the W154 "having a go"

I would certainly liked to have seen Francois Cevert complete the last lap that he ran at Watkins Glen in the fall of 1973.

People seem to be missing the point! It is the car you would like to have driven at a particular circuit not who drove a car in a race you would like to have seen.

Hello Stephen,

How's the anger management going?  It's only a bit of fun, surely? Tangents, non-sequiturs, misunderstandings....all part of TNF's rich tapestry.  I'm not sure what GTB was after but doesn't his  'scenes we'd like to see' give us licence to drift off self-indulgently?

Are you sure Steve ?  Title of thread is " Cars you wished had raced at your favourite track " rather than " Cars you wished you had raced at your favourite track  " and 275 GTB-4 then postulates as to how a big Merc would go in Bob Janes hands at Bathurst

Some are over thinking this, I learned at an early age that the meaning of life was that there was no secret or hidden agenda's, you just get on with it, do your best then check out with dignity. Imagine Le Mans on the side of a big hill, that's Bathurst, and to see a big Merc attacking it (in the period) was just something that tickled my fancy...so please don't be confused little Chris, as long as you mention the car you can embellish with a fav pilote if your heart so desires (yes, even Desiré!)

PS in my case, there was talk of Mr Jane actually entering a big Merc for the Bathurst endurance race.

Prezactly Sir! and yes, I have been known to postulate...usually after missing the #9 bus...

I remember hoping that Peter Brock would turn up at Warwick Farm...

This was in the A30 days. Lyn Brown was trying to make him do it too.

Like Mr Winfield, Cadwell is  my favourite . And like him it's Ickx in a Ferrari- but a 312P for me . A P4 would be wonderful around the fast bits but a bit unwieldy at Mountain . And I would pay a lot to hear a Toyota V10 F1 (20005- ish) car from Barn to Mansfield  ; ditto a Larousse Lamborghini or a Ferrari 641 .

Mmm, you've whetted my appetite John.  I quite fancy an early 1970s Cadwell 1000km, ideally in the 5-litre era but with a competitive bunch of 3-litre Ferraris, Matras, Alfas and Lolas to harry the 917s and 512s. Pedro and Seppi could rub door handles through Coppice, but I think Ickx in the 312PB might be already away and gone!
