A simple question, easy to answer.

I personally miss him because he always delivers exellent performances, nice overtakes and push to the limit without mistakes. And then we have 4 drivers fighting for the victory, lewis and Kimi are doing well but Sebastian in tthe last race was worse than Maldonado, and Rosberg also made mistakes.

You cannot be at that level and make such mistakes, you have to know how to defend position for more than three turns... those guys got nervous the second after they saw someone on the mirrors, it is a shame.

Sebastian did more mistakes in one race than Alonso in his 5 Ferrari years.

Hopefully the Mclaren will improve and he will be with those 4 drivers fighting for the victory.

What do you think?

Yes, love him or loathe him he's a great racer and puts on a great show.  Quite amazing that he was once considered a "cruise and collect" type driver!

Of course. It would be great if McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull all had equally good cars. Some seriously good drivers all battling it out.

Yes. And JB too. Hopefully McLaren can step it up once the Euro season gets underway.

I miss him, Button and Mclaren fighting for wins. Three of the sport's biggest names who all deserve better.

EDIT: Not that I think a title fight with no Alonso is not a devalued or weakened one, you understand. I suspect this year is going to come down to a fight between Hamilton and Vettel, and they're two drivers easily good enough to provide a classic.

No, because you see him fighting for crappy positions and enjoy that instead.  Was he crappy when he drove for Minardi?  If the question was whether I miss him winning, the answer might be different.

Really ? Alonso is a top driver for sure, but lets not drift into bullshit territory here. Alonso has made plenty of mistakes in the last five years, as all the other drivers and teams have done. Choosing McLaren over Ferrari seems like a bit of a clanger in retrospect to me.

Yes. Dream F1 for me would be Alonso v Lewis in the two best teams fighting it out.

Tell me how many times he went off the track defending position. Thanks.

I'm not quite sure of the purpose of this thread. Is it some kind of Fernando driver thread, or maybe just an attempt at rubbishing other drivers you don't happen to like which is totally unnecessary with regard to your initial question and bound to cause arguments. :(

Fernando is still racing and can still put in those fantastic performances, yes it is a shame McLaren aren't at the sharp end but hopefully they will get there at some point.

I would love to see Alonso back at the front. I am a huge fan.

However, Alonso is not the only top-line driver punching below his weight. Button and D.R also have the talent to be credible front-runners. However, nature of the sport dictates that talent is not always rewarded with relative machinery. Especially in this era, where there are so many top drivers, and so few top-line drives available (I only count Mercedes and Ferrari as top line drives this year. Maybe Williams at a stretch, as I could see D.R, Button or Alonso putting it on the podium under favourable circumstances)

I am just holding out hope that McLaren and Honda develop well

Actually I do.

Liked him when fighting for his titles in 05/06

Loathed him after 07

Gained a new found respect for him in his Ferrari years.

He is one of the best, if not the best all round drivers in the current generation of drivers.

Hard to believe it has been 10 years since his first title.

Wow, didn't expect the results to be split 50/50.  I miss Fernando fighting for wins.  I hope Lewis and Fernando have one (or a couple) last fight(s) for the championship with equal cars (as much as possible), it would be awesome.

No because he has convinced himself (and me) that if he comes 2nd or 15th it makes no difference. It's all about winning and nothing else matters. His words.

Fernando went to Mclaren proclaiming he'd want to win straight up. Fighting for top 4 positions wasn't his agenda coz often one is expected to finish 2nd or 3rd if you do that. He doesn't want to be fighting with other drivers for Top 4, he wants to be 1st without a fight, the reason given for leaving Ferrari.

He simply wants/desires the quickest car on the grid so he would be vaulted to First Position every race in the future while other drivers simply lay out the red carpet for him. So 11th to 15th is a great starting point, his dream come true according to his own statements. So be it. No pain, no gain

Yes, I think most supporters would like to see arguably the top driver in the sport at the front, not fighting for 10th.

Fernando over the years has developed a huge following of "Anti-Fans". They are often the fans of drivers he beats.

Yes, even if only to see him beaten by some other great drivers, be that Hamilton, Ricciardo, Vettel, etc. I enjoy the battles at the front without him (if they happen), but for me it is a bit like watching 100m sprints without Usain Bolt or tennis without Djokovic. I guess what I mean is that having Alonso up at the front help to gauge other leading drivers, since he is a very solid reference. Best driver I don't know, but  most def a difficult guy to beat.

I think Fernando would have been the man to beat if he had a better car since 2009.... He is 1a and Lewis would be 1b. In other words, the two very best in F1.

My vote is obvious but if I was a neutral fan, my vote will be yes too. Outside those who can't distinguish between his dislike for him and his driving skills, seasons like 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2012 prove that Fernando fighting at the top brings a lot of entertainment to the sport, as a F1 fan you have to like that even if you dislike his personality I believe.

I used to dislike his personality too, but even that aspect has gotten much better in the past few years. He's much more mature and calm now than when he first joined McLaren.

Lets open a topic so we can praise Alonso and bash on Vettel for no particular reason, i don't see how Vettel has to do with this, dumb comment IMO, and to be fair hate it as much as you like Vettel its most likely to do in Ferrari what Alonso couldn't and thats it winning a championship, so yeah i miss Alonso in the "front" that usual 5th place he usually get its weird to see others there, but hey same as Maldonado when he trash talked to Williams in 2013 and ended up in Lotus fighting Marussia while Williams was the 2nd best team happened to Alonso when he trash talked Ferrari and ended up fighting Marussia, so good to see Karma in action.

You don't have to win races to beat the guy in the same car. Something Alonso does mercilessly year in year out.

Maybe the fact Alonso was just avoiding mistakes is the reason he never won WDC with Ferrari.

He should be at the front but maybe having to work hard at dragging the McLaren up there will give it a lot more meaning to his fans than if he had simply replaced Lewis at Merc. For example.

Personally I don't miss him as I am too concerned with JB not being at the top.

Wringing the performance out of an uncompetitive car is what he does best. A season with Alonso in a top car, winning every race by a mile would be as dull as this one.

Alonso or Button getting into Q2 now would cause more excitement than a Mercedes or Ferrari or even a Williams getting a podium.

You need action at both ends of the pack.Mclaren is providing this and will be interesting to follow as they improve.

Yes.

Fighting lower down the field is still a fight and Alonso puts up one hell of a fight, but it doesn't have the tension or the feeling of reward as fighting for the top spots does. His race isn't followed by the cameras or the commentators midfield as it would be out front, so it loses some of the edge.

He'll be back though, the battles we did see in China show he never gives up no matter what he's driving.

Because the OP actually wants to ask "is Fernando better than Seb?" in that poll.

Anyone not missing arguably the best driver in the world fighting at the top is watching F1 for the wrong reasons.

Can't believe the result of the poll.

The votes are probably negative because the OP is really more about how Alonso would do a far better job in Ferrari or Mercedes and how inferior drivers are in better machines.
