This is a pretty incredible display of mediocre driving but Rahal the long way around Hunter Reay was sexy.
and Helio.

What a magnificent race -- I just wish I could've watched it live and contributed here, but alas.
As for Rahal... someone needs to revive Andrew Hope's "Favorite 2nd Places" thread... a wild challenger has appeared.

Yes waaay!
Looking at the overall results, it turns out 251 other people - including Marshall Pruett and two of the IMS top dogs, Doug Boles and CJ O'Donnell - made this pick! It was, incidentally, an exact $100 salary cap. One less yellow and I might have been more accurate on the speed, too: that meant I was 82nd on the tiebreaker.
Quite astonishing to find that my 550 points total so far means I'm thirteenth in the overall standings.

Wooo hooo! I finished lucky 13th this week. Wait. What?
Congrats to all those who finished 12th and higher. To all those in 14th and below, just remember it doesn't get much worse.

Best IndyCar race this year. Congrats to Newgarden, his owners, and team. Fine driving from Joseph, and Graham Rahal as well. The usual from Helio (blocking), and Power (stupidity). This series at it's best (like this race) is wonderful entertainment, keep it going. IndyCar.

That's true.
Maybe a better analogy would be to say the Merc's would be finishing 15th/16th every second race, despite being the best car on the grid.
Theoretically there is no "best" car on the grid in IndyCar. F1 would be like IndyCar if all teams had to use Red Bull chassis, with a choice of Mercedes or Honda power for example. Notice I said theoretically. Obviously there are "best" cars in IndyCar, despite the best efforts of the rules-makers.

If only Power could not make brainfart moves every race he'd probably be the best driver in Indycar.
An interesting point of view. Trying to think of an F1 example, but none immediately comes to mind.

Hamilton\Massa 2011 comes to mind. Lewis made some pretty cringeworthy comments too (remember the "because I'm black" remark at Monaco?). Though I think a more fitting comparison is a modern version of Paul Tracy.
Not sure if you meant Hamilton and Massa, but I have never considered Massa to be anywhere near the best in F1 brainfarts or not.

I really thought that this race would be a boring procession with the new aero package. Sometimes it's good to be wrong.
Great race with plenty happening and WIll Power being Will Power.

WHAT? ...Have you no sense of the irony he was implying?
Have you not experienced enough of these threads to imbibe some idea of satire and making fun?

The Barber race summed up why I love Indy Car. It had everything. Wheel Banging, varied strategies, hard chargers, heroes, villains, and an underdog winner.
Who said Penske was going to dominate this year?
Shame about JPM though but that's my bias.

caught up with the race. entertaining stuff. i like that track it reminds me of brands hatch. what's all this stuff about newgarden joining haas next year? is that a better move than being in a car/team that can actually win races in indycar? is it just fluff or would he jump at it?

I personally think Newgarden would be good enough and a great asset to the team - but we all know talent is rarely the primary factor in deciding F1 seats any more.
(And before anybody asks, no, this appraisal of Newgarden isn't a bandwagon-jumping exercise; I've long valued Newgarden's talent. That he happened to take his inaugural victory last weekend is purely coincidental!)

West Country Racing Hipster alert: I saw Josef Newgarden take a couple of second places during a Formula Ford meeting at a drizzly Castle Combe in 2009. Although the only competitor who we're likely to hear of again in a racing context was Dan Cammish.

For someone that was inexperienced (relatively speaking) at the time, Newgarden made Esteban Guerrieri look second rate in Indy Lights. Lapping the rest of the field at New Hampshire was a particular highlight. Bearing in mind that Guerrieri had just arrived after a 50% win rate FR3.5 campaign...

Just finished watching this one last night. Race of the year, in any series, so far for me. Commentators seemed to be having fun, the racing was great, and you guys were hilarious as always.
However, I have to say that the winner comes as little surprise to me--following on the above theme of Newgarden being a talented driver:
Taking a break from his busy Verizon IndyCar Series schedule, Josef Newgarden called racing in Sunday's SCCA Summer Speedfest Formula F 45th Anniversary feature race the "most fun he had all year," running from last to first to win at Barber Motorsports Park. Sixteen year-old sensation Max Mallinen finished second.
Granted, it was an eleven-car field, but apparently, he spent most of the weekend owning everyone at Formula Ford. (Also an honourable mention to Clint McMahan in Formula 500, also mentioned in that article, who'd probably be quite the Indycar driver in his own right given the means).
Very happy to see him get a win that's been long overdue since perhaps as long ago as Sao Paolo 2013. Rock on, Josef!
