He did win the 2012 Spanish GP, pole and all, remember?

Simple answer is no. He is one of the worst drivers on the grid for me.

One good result 3 years ago does not make him a good driver. Take that win out of this career record and you will find that he has done nothing of note besides waste a seat that someone good could have had.

He can sometimes have good speed but he's very inconsistent with it and makes a lot of errors. I would say even his speed itself isn't that crash hot, he's certainly behind Grosjean who I don't rate particularly highly.

He's got a lot more ability than many give him credit for. He's not some crappy pay driver, no matter what anybody says.

But his reputation for not bringing home the results that his ability would indicate he's capable of is deserved. He does make too many costly mistakes and finds himself in trouble due to ill-advised driver choices. He's had bad luck as well, which makes things seem worse at times, but only a *bit* worse. Most of his 'misfortunes' are indeed of his own making.

Contrast with somebody like Grosjean, who also had a deserved reputation for a while, but I would say that his bad luck was often worse and was a bigger contributor to his lack of results. He's also shown, both in junior categories and in F1, the ability to clean things up and become a very strong driver that can bring home results, car willing, and put together a good season. This is something that Maldonado does not seem any closer to now than before.

I would rate Maldonado as something like an even less consistent Felipe Massa, albeit one with more tenacity, which may well be the problem....

Why so many Maldonado topics all of a sudden?

Because he is a very popular driver and interesting personality perhaps?

He's definitely fast.  Like Patrese and de Cesaris.  The hope was by now he would have learned to tame his speed.  Like Patrese did and which de Cesaris never did.  Which is why Patrese is a multiple-winning elder statesman and de Cesaris never won a race.  And then died when he lost control of his motorbike.

His one lap pace is ok, but nothing specical. Bottas and Grosjean showed that. In terms of actual race pace I think he is potentially top 10 material, but his racecraft is obviously very poor. Not that I mind, I bet on him having the most DNF's this year. :p

Agree with the analysis that he's like a more error-prone Massa.

Please check if there's already a thread open before starting one. No-one needs so much Pastor.
