I would love to see them try to reconfigure the car to the correct spec for the time, they probably could find out the tyre compound etc and fuel spec and then do some fast laps using the circuits original configuration which is still laid out. Alonso would still have some variables but they could do some good onboard past and present comparisons. Also Fernando would be able to give a proper modern drivers perspective of the old cars then.
That's a clutch & stick shift. I don't think Alonso or any other modern driver would add anything to the record board without a year worth of practice.

I'll see your reading and raise you an autograph signing...
What can be more powerful that a picture of a driver doing his contractually mandated PR. The way the photographer captured the exact moment when he turned his head to look back. Simply amazing. I've got this one framed on my wall, and I'm a Webber fan.
Oh come on! For people seeing and posting 100s of pictures a day of every piece of crap imaginable, a picture of their fav driver winning must be very powerful indeed...

First seen this on a cover of a sports magazine. My 14-year-old self was pretty impressed, and it promptly ended up on my wall.

I always wondered about this pic (Dan Guerney on the left, squatting, Jim Clark on the exhausts)... Wait. He is sitting on the exhausts? Isn't that risky? Aren't those quite hot, most of the times? I always thought the same when drivers in the sixties hitch hiked to the pits and sat on the back of the car...

Bathurst 1 2 victory, Allan Moffat and Colin Bond.
Bill Brown rolling his XT GTHO Phase 3 numerous times on the armco, destroying the car, miraculously surviving.
The end result of Dick Johnson crashing his Greens Tuf Falcon into the trees at Bathurst, again he survived.
There are numerous clips of it on youtube.
Dick Johnson hitting "The Rock" at Bathurst in 1980, changed his career after that.

Someone already posted Hakkinen and Schumacher's pictures. Here are a couple more. It is rare to see camaraderie like that anymore.

When Hakkinen won, they spent the night singing at Karaoke bar... when Schumacher won, it was just the same.
Don't get me started on what i think of two champion drivers b**** and moan about Newey even as recently as last year. I wonder what the drivers from before, many of whose pictures have been posted on this thread, what they would have to say about the catty nature of some of the current lot.

How could you not love Mika? I understand that Schumacher made his enemies, but I can't think of anyone that really disliked Hakkinen for anything on or off track. I miss him.

Nemo's post in another thread made me look into this. Lauda tested a Jag F1 back in 2002 while he was still team boss, to "better understand the electronic aids". He spun 2 times and was way off the pace, but it was still interesting to see that face/helmet in a then-contemporary car.

Re Clark sitting on the exhausts. The car was stopped having run out of petrol and Gurney and Clark were waiting to be towed back to the pits after the race had ended.

I would have thought that someone may have posted this here. F1 is a seller's market, in that there're always more drivers than seats, so this is impressive to me.

some other pictures are also there. didn't post them all here, as i would like to see the original page getting some hits too.
Erm, she made a note about something if this were to be the current drivers, and i agree...
Imagine our 22 sharing a room..
Kimi and Seb would lie next to each other… and keep babbling all night to the dismay of the other drivers, who can’t sleep ;)
Personally, i can't see drivers today being bothered to collectively stand, and make a point.

ANF,
among the most powerful images, your post 61 stands out in perspective, composition, lighting, and last but not least the different cornering techniques chosen by the drivers. But who are those drivers, and where was this picture taken?
Anybody?
Jan.

Thanks E.B. - Grand Prix of Italy 1965 in Google straightaway leads to the same picture in a better resolution, with accompanying text to confirm it's Clark leading Stewart (winner), Hill and Gurney following indeed.
So the different lines taken are for a large part explained by the Parabolic nature of the corner, but also indicate that even in the underpowered 1.5 liter F1 cars of the time, car control and driving technique could be exploited. If only to ensure an optimum position to start the slipstreaming on the start/finish straight
