Anyone had a play with this? Available on Steam Early Access: http://www.gameplane...o-Early-Access/

Looks like it's harks back to the good old days of Colin McRae Rally, which would be a good thing.

Will wait for it to be on sale, is gonna be a controller game rather than a wheel one I think, but some of theri stuff is good.

Dirt 2 for me is one of the best arcade driving games ever and I still play it now, back when games were made properly not simply rushed together.

Dirt 3 was better with a wheel than a gamepad, it was not perfect, but it had a decent feel and force feedback, I think Dirt rally is going to be even better after a few patches, even at its current state seems to be quite nice to play with a wheel

I haven't bought the game so far, but it's looking good, nice graphics as Dirt 3, but with better stages and handling

a few interesting videos:

Ok... let's see.

  • FFB is very poor. No real contact with anything.
  • The cars are sluggish, slow, lack power, and have way too good brakes.
  • Not had the WRC car over 142-143 km/h - with a sole exception (downhill at Sweet Lamb, managed 161 km/h)
  • No weight movement in the car, it feels flat
  • On wet gravel, 4500 RPM 2nd gear, full throttle, and the WRC-car bogs down, instead of spinning (again, lack of power).
  • Able to brake extremely late into corners, this is a combination of lack of power and to good brakes.
  • The cars doesn't really slide around.
  • Monte Carlo/Monaco... braking on snow/ice feels like tarmac tyres (very slippery), but it have good grip when accelerating and turning.
  • Also good grip on the tarmac at Monte Carlo/Monaco - so no idea what tyre it is on the car.
  • No chance to change ride height or tyres!
  • Controllers are reset when you exit the game
  • Typical DiRT stages. One long, chopped into 3-4 short ones, that you can drive both ways. So very few actually unique stages!

Positive stuff

  1. H-Gearing with forced Clutch! (Could be bettered if you could force it into gear while slightly missing the clutch, and by that making damage to the gearbox)
  2. Stages feel good, at least the gravel ones (with feel, I mean that there are hidden dangers, they are narrow, it's more rally than the usual DiRT stuff)
  3. The potential is there, but I have no idea if Codemasters can deliver on it.
  4. At least 2-3 stages that can take 8-9 minutes to complete

Unless you like the DiRT series, and/or have full faith in Codemasters ability to make to full sim - you should wait on this to be developed.

It still doesn't drive any better, but it looks nice at least :) That's something! :)

Tried it over the weekend, but i guess i have a lot of tweaking to do with the controller settings, as i had no clue what the front wheels where doing when i tried to steer the car.... FF felt strange, steering felt very much digital (like it was set up to drive with a keyboard or digital controller), accelerator and brakes felt "off" compared to other games/sims. As mentioned, it looks good, and as early access it wasn't that expensive, so i could either wait and hope they adress the controller issues i have, or start tweaking all the settings to see if i can get some feel from the car.

Oh, and why, WHY,  can't you just be able to use the mouse to navigate the menu? would have made it a lot simpler when you have to tweak as much as i obviously do...

Bearing in mind that it's still early access and the long-awaited FFB patch is yet to be released, I'm having great fun with this game!

Brakes are a little weird but otherwise I quite like the handling - the steering takes a little getting used to but I've got the hang of it now. I can certainly tell the difference once I've given a tree a bit of a nudge, though in an ideal world I'd like the damage to be even more sensitive! :p

I will agree, however, on comments saying that cars (particularly the more powerful ones) feel rather underpowered and that there's too much grip on ice :well:

Nonetheless, I'm having fun with the online events and the AI's giving me a fine challenge offline. Nice visuals, too!

It's not as hardcore as RBR but I still think that DiRT Rally is probably the best rally game released in this decade  Looking forward to that FFB patch!

Looks very good. Cars seem to handle like one can expect. Have you tried it?

Yup, my video that was linked there!

I have done a fair amount of RX in my life, but never SuperCars, but in my mind, it feels very good. As I knew the tracks well, and also knew how the car was supposed to behave, it was more a process of getting used to the power and speed of the SuperCars. Just like I would expect it to be IRL:

It also looks very much correct when looking at replays, so all in all, I would say that it is very good! .)

That was what I thought also, it looks like weight transitions and everything is modelled very well.

Bought this game last night, and impressed with it. But finding it a huge learning curve. Struggling to even get to the end of stages!

Definitely not one for casual gamers, that's for sure.

From what I've seen on videos it appear to handle very realistically, but a bit "tight"... as if it don't really want to drift? What are your opinion about that?

From a PC player the game falls into two categories.

The older cars and the rwd stuff are superbly programmed physics wise, you can really drift them nicely and steer them on the throttle, and you can set up  the fwd cars to be nice and rear endy to with brake bias. The gamje is wirth getting for THEM ALONE< dont bother with the 4wd cras, you will probably be disaapointed!

Anything mid engined is a real challenge, and all of them are very demanding to drive, and not in a nice way, they all feel very floaty and in my opinion every mid engined car in the game feels awful on asphalt, some can be nice on gravel, for instance the Stratos and 037, notice again they are both rwd. But drive both on tar and theya re almost mipossible, needlessly twitchy and no fun, unlike the Manta and M3 for instance.

The 4wd cars are very boring, extremely dull to drive but obviously very fast, the later in years you go the harder it is to see out of the car if you use cockpit view, so cars like the C4, Hyundai etc are very difficult to use. But Subaru, Escort, etc are fine.

They are quick but too "grippy",

Rallycross is dull, too few tracks and the online races are either alien fests or demo derbies would rather have more stages and countries and get rid of rallycross totally, it's a token gesture to enable onlne play and WRX coffers to swell, though the new content adds classes.

Hillclimb too, rather dull, cars all feel the same, though the tracks are good.

My take on DIRT Rally is that it's pretty impressive in most ways, but in terms of the core driving/handling/physics, it's actually probably bettered by Sevastien Loeb Rally Evo, which is a shock as Milestone have tended to release rubbish prior to this. On the flip side, SLRE doesn't looks as nice, doesn't run as well...

Also DIRT really lacks content after a few weeks, it's longevity comes in trying to get good at it, which is pretty hard. SLRE has more cars and a better career structure. Rallycross is much better done in DIRT Rally but again, there are only two or three tracks.

Combine the best bits of the two and you've got pretty much the ultimate rally game. But you can't do that.

I guess it depends on a few thinks - what driving aids you're happening to be using, your driving style, and the car. I've been driving the Alpine 110 and it is possible to get it to drift, but it does require a bit of practice - for me anyway! I'm by no means the best player (at the moment) so if you talk to someone else they may say something completely different.

There's definitely a knack to getting the hairpins/sharp bends right without losing much time, anyway.

I have had just little experience with the game so far and loving it.

60's championship 4th at Greece, 1st at Monte Carlo and 1st at Germany.

No driving aids, normal opponent difficulty.

Well, I use for gears flappy pads and I set hand brake on gear stick. That's the only cheating I did.

Some tips for wheels:

Set wheel saturation at 35-40% for right rally car feeling (if you have 900 degs wheel). If you like more sensitive brake pedal, set saturation for 50%.

I disagree on this. While Loeb Evo have something underneath that never really comes to the surface, there are so much strange things in the game, when it comes to driving, ffb and physics that I cannot rate it better than DiRT!

It's definitely not as difficult as 'Richard Burns Rally' was on the original Xbox, though. That game still gives me nightmares.

Simply put you have to learn the stages.  There are a lot of errors in the notes and they are not as informative to you start cutting and taking the cuts you need to get really quick.

I have found notes being best than in any other rally game so far. In past there was one rally game I don't remember name, but you were able to edit notes yourself.

Notes are generally good, but in real life there's some addons and finetuning made into notes by driver and co-driver. However, you can adjust pace of notes in Dirt Rally, which is good nod.

Switching to a better PC seems to have improved my skills in this game. Maybe because the game no longer stutters when you have to turn into a tricky 3 right on heavy Greek gravel.

I'm not rating SLRE over DIRT, I just think Loeb deals with the change of surface and feeling of change of grip etc better.

The two are almost night and day aside from that - although I do like SLRE for its selection of cars, accurate stages (comparable to DIRT on that) etc - as a game, it chugs along at a rubbish frame rate, the difficulty level has you 20 seconds faster than anyone one stage and 20 seconds slower the next, and the Rallycross is rubbish. DIRT is a great game.

Between asphalt and snow I agree with you, there SLRE have got it nailed. However, the change between asphalt and gravel, doesn't feel right in SLRE, compared to what I would expect (seeing as RX is one of the two things I have actual experience with).
SLRE have more iconic rally cars, but also very many cars that only differs in livery. Also not too sure about the accuracy of the stages. I know they claim it, but seeing as I've been through one of the stages in game 10-12 times IRL, and there is not a single place that fits at all. I am very unsure about that actually being the case for many stages.

Being honest, after a couple of days really getting into DIRT Rally, I went back and played SLRE and was shocked. So bloody slow, like you're driving through treacle. Strange, bouncy physics where hitting a verge wrong sends your car 20ft in the air. Shoddy visuals. I think the more I get into DIRT the more I'm realising how good it is.

On the other hand, for comparison's sake I then booted up WRC5 too, and that actually stood up slightly better than I expected.

After some weeks playing Dirt Rally, I would say I like it pretty much, above all the control and physics.
The only thing I dislike is the blurry effect that appears in the background in some stages with trees and dense forest, which makes me get dizzy.

It's a really fantastic sim  The level design is fantastic and behaviour of the cars feels like how you watch rally cars on TV. And playing it with a G25 ona  3 screen setup, v synced on top graphics is probably the most immersive driving experience I've had on PC. Trying to keep the RS200 out of the trees on the tricky off camber stages and huge jumps of rally finland was absolutely gripping, I've never tensed up so much driving a sim! Recommend it. It's not perfect but it moves on rally sims somewhat for me.
