My favourite wild design: the first AVS (Advanced Vehicle System) Shadow Can-Am car, 1970 - which went to great lengths to acheive a wedge body with minimal frontal area. It used special small diameter tires by Firestone. If you're looking for the radiator, it's in the rear wing - the only place where there was room for it. I'm sure most of the aerodynamic drag came from the exposed monster V-8. (Thanks to itsawheelthing at tumblr.)

Those CAN-AM cars must have been terrifying.

Brilliant video below from Monaco 1969 where 'Aerofoils'  were on and off during the weekend. Graham Hill turning spanners!

"Lotus came out looking like good boys, saw everybody else wasn't being good boys and put their aerofoils back on again"

"it looks fairly likely they will be banned forever"

Strange enough, Robin Herd's March 721X never won a Concours d'Elegance;

Yes, It was George Follmer - first race of the 1970 season at Mosport Park, east of Toronto. Qualifed 6th; DNF - engine overheating.

Wunibald Kamm founded the FKFS (Forschungsinstitut für Kraftfahrwesen und Fahrzeugmotoren Stuttgart)in 1930.

I can see why he went for the acronym.

(Seriously enjoying your posts, btw)

Not the original wheelnuts. Back in the day they had the standard 3-winged nuts that you hit with a hammer.

"Aerofoil" was the term used when they were still a novelty. "Wing" became the term when they became standard.

Late in 1968 the use of the word "wing" became already more and more standard - see e.g. Robin Herd's article "Wings on racing cars" in the 1968/69 Autocourse edition.
