Add in a few dozen million here and there as bonus for winning a couple of raises and Mercedes is well on its way to making an important contribution to F1's cost cutting agenda!

On a more serious note; as long as Mercedes wants to keep Hamilton, and evidently they do, he'd be silly to go elsewhere.

$100 million a year for 3 years or $100 million over 3 years?

$100 million a year for 3 years or $100 million over 3 years?

Judging by the figures we've seen bandied around recently, I'd say both.

Any delay in the signing was solely due to Hamilton negotiating and checking the contract all by himself. He had decided to not employ a manager to spare himself the hefty expenses.

Senna used to earn that didn't he in the early 90's as far as I remember so it's no big deal to me.

Over the three years.

The latter, according to the source.

Tbh it can be read both ways - $100 million a year is a bit crazy if it is that though

So that's 30 mil. € per year. How much are Vettel and Alonso earning, also around 30 mil. per year right?

Base pay probably would't even need to touch it while maintaining his chosen lifestyle. In the scheme of things, $2,5mil / mth isn't that much considering the volume of money flying around the F1 circus.

Vettel earns 50mil this year and 20mil(I think) in subsequent years.

F1 has turned Lewis into a global marketeers' dream and that earns him significantly more than his take home pay. He needs F1 to maintain that status. I have a feeling that would be on his mind during negotiations. Secondly, he gets to keep his money - no agent fees !

His bonuses will obviously mean he'll get plenty more, on top of merchandising and other things he does. It's a lot of money, but at the same time, if he wanted that much and Mercedes said no, and they couldn't come to an agreement, then he'd go somewhere else. Evidently they're ok paying him that much, so it's no big deal.

As far as I can remember the best Senna got was $1M per race in 93 which put him at $16m. I seem to recall Prost mention that his entire career earnngs from F1 were $40M.

Which according to a old-new type price calculator I found and a bit of conversion (Which I know won't be completely accurate before anyone throws a hissy fit) equates to about $29.6m per year for Senna.

Either way, if they're willing to pay it then take it.  I doubt anyone here would object to a pay rise stating they are being paid too much.

So is Lewis the highest paid driver now in terms of base? Excluding Seb's mahoosive Golden Handshake of course.

From that link:

"The reigning world champion's protracted contract negotiations have been a major talking point during the 2015 season."

This says a lot about the general excitement levels of the 2015 season so far.

You must be pleased though!  So more Scooby snacks and a couple of new feeding bowls.  One a 'designer' edition with a picture of Lassie on the side, the other a rare limited edition bowl with 'The Littlest Hobo's' paw print in the centre.  Good times ahead for you.

No, because rumor has it that there is an Alonso clause in the new contract.  This clause can be taken if performance conditions are not met, with the activation date being the 24th December of the contracted year.

Maybe the article was clear but I couldn't access it at the time (and as it turns out was in German anyway) which was why I was asking for clarification - the tweet however was ambiguous and likely purposely so. If someone said to you they were on '$60k salary for 3 years' I would take that as $60k a year for 3 years, as normally a salary figure refers to an annual income - so to me 'a $100m salary for three years' can be taken as $100m a year for 3 years. So I imagine a lot of people go 'WTF!?!' and follow the link to the article... :)

So Lewis will be on 6 world championship titles by the end of 2018? Unless rules change meantime and Mercedes loses the edge. Or there is an odd year, where Hamilton has an off year or tyres do funny tricks like in 2013 and Ferrari capitalizes.
