For a 2016 entrant I assume somebody must have approached the FIA wanting to enter and this is to facilitate that. Must surely be manufacturer backed then so Honda backed junior squad or Renault would seem to be the only candidates.

If that's not the case then it's further evidence of the FIAs deludedness

or 2017, that don't have to enter next year.

Honda jr... Highly doubt that. Only one that makes sense is Renault but once again so highly doubt that with 2017 not clearly defined yet.

So we'll lose Manor, Sauber and Force India. And get a McLaren b-team in return.

Someone with technical backing must have approached the FIA. I mean, without a big name behind them why would they grab a grenade with no pin?

Abt Racing, with Daniel taking the first seat and Adrien Tambay as #2?

An unofficially works supported Audi entry to test the waters perhaps?

I'll bet that's interesting to Audi, who've once again rejected the exercise..

Aguri Racing Team to make f1 step-up return by the support of a team whose current livery looks like Honda Racing Team ? :p

What are the chances of DAMS making the leap forward with Renault backing? Seeing a lot of talk of ART moving up, just wondering if anyone else can.

So far Gene Haas is putting on a brave face, but he just has to be wondering what he's gotten himself into. I simply don't get how someone credible signs up now, without any idea what the rules will be in 18 months.

I doubt that. Despite its flaws f1 is still one of the most watched sports in the world.

Way too short notice, if you want a new team to be even remotely competitive with the current regulations then they need at least 18 months preparation (like Haas are doing). Confirmation in September? You'll end up with another Hispania 2010. A rushed effort where cars are still being built at round 1.

Customer cars should change this when it happens as I expect, but for the time being the FIA are once again being ludicrous and worse, haven't learnt from last time.

Announce the application dates.
Grease the palms of the usual wide boys to publicly express interest with caveats about costs.
Use this as argumentation to introduce customer cars.
Wait for the "show" to get better and the "racing" to get worse.
Open thread in 2022... "Customer cars - the death of F1 as we knew it".

It would seem to me that, in the not too distant future, half the grid will be made up of the big teams, whilst the other half will be made up of their B teams. Not a concept I particularly approve of myself :(

Jean-Paul Driot had a very good look at F1 in 1994-95. If anything, the context was much more favorable then.

ORECA tried it with Martini in 1978 and backed out. They are still alive as a team/constructor/entrant/organisation, arguably as a result of Hugues de Chaunac pulling out of F1. Mind you, he still had personal F1 involvement afterwards with both AGS and Larrousse.

Interesting one this. If nobody applies then it shows F1 in a bad light indeed, but if people do apply, what chance have they got ? This is all playing into Bernies' hands, yet again.

I would think it would show how the Bernie' package is failing, and not in any way playing into his hands if no one applied.

Having seen what happened to Marussia and Caterham, who would apply? You'd have to be nuts.

At least any prospective applicant isn't under the illusion that budget caps are going to be introduced imminently, allowing them to compete with a proper business plan in place.

Right now Renault are sitting on the fence, they have not decided to leave, continue as an engine manufacturer, or go whole hog and be a team again. This is an opportunity to build their own team from the ground up. But now the window to decide is very tight, they must make a decision very soon.

Do you want to p*ss away millions of dollars, scrabbling for sponsors, circulating uncompetitively at the back of the field, whilst the suits in charge shaft you financially? Are bankruptcy and debt appealing to you? Does an overly restrictive development environment get you excited?

Then come on in and join us, we are inviting applicants with money to invest or just a financially creative portfolio. Your background is not important, we'll deal with anyone, dictatorships and oppressive regimes welcome.

F1, we're ready to take YOUR money.

Renault aren't going to waste years and millions of pounds building up a new team when they can purchase an already successful one.

Why anyone would want to enter F1 at the moment is beyond me.

I really don't think the FIA are going to get many applications....

F1 has been like this (i.e. not the best motorsport to enter) since the mid 1990's and it hasn't stopped people from applying.

No, the numbers are a bit crazy now. The costs have risen enormously and there's very few sponsors out there.

Sad state of affairs when even Colin Kolles and Stefan GP have lost interest in joining the sport.

I don't think a decision was due until September. Do we actually know no one has expressed an interest?

I would be surprised if nobody was taking a look. Even if entering F1 in its current state is not particularly wise, it doesn't hurt to know what the FIA/FOM are asking for, and the potential terms and numbers involved. You don't have to make a tender after all.

It just surprised me as the last tender opened was basically because Gene Haas showed an interest, hence the tender in 2013. So when they announced a new tender it was thought because someone was already lined up, even if the process is still ongoing, you'd have thought they would have announced it.

It's cute that the FIA can pretend that they're still a desirable series to enter, that they have to whittle down applications to those most worthy to keep the grid size and quality under control. I don't know what they've been smoking to imagine it, though. Surely any application process is mainly FIA begging and promising prospective teams that it'll get better soon, honest. Like they did for the 2010 entries.

Can't say I blame anyone. You'd have to be clinically insane to want to join F1 right now (has Haas had a check up? Maybe he should.) If I ran an F3/GP2/Formula Whatever team I'd want nothing to do with the mess that is contemporary F1.

Usually potential F1 entries kick up some PR to attract investors before they make an application.

I've not seen any groups doing that this time round.
