Err I think the biggest issue with that movie was the entire middle that was fabricated. Ie Christian Bale having to sit at home when in reality he actually raced at Le Mans.

The end of the race spoilt it, perpetuating the bullshit story about starting positions affecting the result. A dying myth brought back to life for another generation. I think that's why I tend to prefer either proper documentaries or full on fiction, not the "based on a true story" middle ground.
Tbh I found that part incredibly difficult to follow.

Good, I hope everyone did!
Essentially it showed a dead heat (or Miles actually very slightly ahead if you freeze frame it, but I think a dead heat was the intention) and then a PA announcement that McLaren/Amon won because they had started further back and therefore travelled further.
Of course in real life there was no question that McLaren finished ahead of Miles and so the starting position tie breaker never needed to be invoked (if indeed the ACO hadn't just invented that rule on the spot to persuade Ford management - the real villains of the piece - not to even attempt such a thing).

That was creating a new myth, not perpetuating an old one. Yeah, maybe that does make it worse actually.

I case anyone missed the news, the in-development-since-forever Michael Mann Ferrari project is finally filming, with Adam Driver playing Enzo...

That's a triumph of casting! They must have scoured the acting profession to find someone who looked absolutely nothing like the Commendatore. Even Remo Girone in 'Ford vs Ferrari' looked more like Enzo, and he was badly cast.
As for F1 themes, a biopic of Graham Hill could have a lot of the right bits to it - chap joins Lotus as a mechanic, gets into racing, wins WC in a BRM (!!), and then for Lotus, dominates Monaco for a generation, wins Indy, suffers dreadful crash, fights back to race again, wins Le Mans despite unconvinced team-mate Pescarolo, starts own team, and the final tragic dénouement of the plane crash. Then as a coda, the success of his son. Pure Hollywood. But who to cast as Hill?

In the top right corner, you can see him shaking the hand of sometime FIA WEC driver Patrick Dempsey, who is playing Piero Taruffi. The movie is apparently centered around the '57 Mille Miglia, which Taruffi won.
The other interesing bit that this movie had been in development limbo since... 1991.

Is there a list of racing movies available to peruse somewhere? I would be interested in it if there were.

I mean it is not a documentary, but a fictive figure, mechanic, founder, champion, car business, and be dismissed.
I know nothing about any facts, but picking the names i can only imagine that Brad Pitt is too old to play the role of any active racer.
I personally would have liked Da Caprio doing Ron just because he can make thing more intense while attracting female audiences and film critics. Pitt is cool tho, but a bit too sweet in my taste to act as Ron Dennis..,
Hope for a strong film, but i think it will be a tea table film..

Had David Niven lived in the present day, he would have been an obvious choice.

My Dad would have been a good bit of casting. He had the chin for it. Pity he wasn't an actor!

Peter Sellers wouldnt have done a terrible job either.
Yet, from the current mainstream actors, I cant see any further than Peaky Blinders actor Paul Anderson

Having said that, there are many documentaries that are fantastic and lots of actual racing footage that can be found from all categories. My favorites are probably the one about the evolution of safety in F1 where you can actually compare the stakes of racing in the past to today (that alone is better than anything a fictionalization can provide)and a history of rallying that I found on YouTube. The part about the âkiller Bsâ is probably some of the scariest and most impressive driving I have ever seen. So yeah, IMO better spend your time watching something real and truly amazing than an interpretation of someone who probably doesnât understand racing at all and has never even driven a stick shiftâŠ

I have seen it long, long time ago. Much as I normally enjoy the acting of Pacino and love the sight of Marthe Keller, it was a really bad movie. It is most certainly much more of a romantic drama than a racing film and the racing scenes (with the gorgeous red Martini-Brabham Pacino is driving) are ok'ish but rather dull and there are not that many of them. Expect lots of deeply dull dialogue and some rather nice European scenery and that's about it.Has anyone ever seen Bobby Deerfield? Iâm presuming it stinks but curious to know for sure.

As many have said, modern F1 lends itself more to comedy or dramedy than anything.

Sid James as Enzo Ferrari would have been a very entertaining piece of (mis)casting.
