The Elmira (NY) Star-Gazette reported this on Monday, June 30, 1930:

Auto Drivers To Race Two Days at Glen

Watkins Glen, June 30 — A two-day auto racing meet will be staged on the Watkins Glen speedway Friday and Saturday, July 4 and 5, under auspices and for the benefit of Watkins Glen American Legion Post. These will be the first auto races to be held on the local dirt track.

The American Legion is planning a new Legion home, and the proceeds of the two day speed classic will go toward the fund. The Legion band will appear in concert, and the post will present a big fireworks display the evening of July 4.

The race track has been widened, rebuilt and rebanked, and the turns protected by new hub rails. Knights of the dirt track will qualify for races the day before, so that there will be a solid afternoon of racing each day.

Among the leading speedsters entered is George Brayan of Syracuse, who captured many dirt track events in Florida, Harry Larsen of Penn Yan is another strong contender, while John Janstrom of Baldwinsville is expected to give both a great race.

Among other entries are: Joe West, Oneida; A. E. Waterman, Syracuse; Starr Shaw, Ithaca; Floyd Marshall, East Bloomfleld; Ross Birch, Canandaigua; H. A. Ray, Herkimer; Martin Vosburg, Macedon; Jerry Johnson, Ithaca, and Otto Burdick, Oneida.

Three days later:

Auto Drivers Vie Today For Race Places

Watkins Glen, July 3 — Begoggled knights of the fastest and most thrilling of dirt track sports — motor racing — will on Friday and Saturday formally dedicate the new speedway at Watkins Glen with a two-day speed classic. The event is under auspices of Watkins Glen Post, 555, and is for the benefit of the American Legion home building fund.

The American Legion will formally dedicate the half-mile dirt track as a speedway during the two-day carnival of thrills. The track has been reconstructed, resurfaced and rebanked. Turns are widened and a hard clay fill and covering of oil, with new hub rails, has transformed the track into a first-class speedway. A bevy of drivers are already on hand, and qualifying time trials were being held today.

There are several drivers of prestige and speedway reputations entered for the two days. George Brayon of Syracuse, who for two years held every dirt track record in Florida, is foremost. A. E. Waterman, another Syracuse speed demon, will be there. Others are Starr Shaw and Jerry Johnson, Ithaca; Otto Burdick and Joe West, Oneida; H. W. Ray, Herkimer; John Janstrom, Baldwinsville; Harry Larsen and Frank Conley, Penn Yan; Ross Birch, Canandaigua; Martin Vosburgh, Masedon, and Floyd Marshall, East Bloomfield.
