See that's one of the issues about things like GWC finishes, or your proposed 10 to go restart, they lead me to wondering why the fvck I wasted my life watching the preceding 2,536 laps.  For me, the artificiality of it defeats the point of having many of the laps prior to then.

Completely agree.  Who even bothers watching the first 4/5 of a NASCAR race now?

I do. Pocono didn't have any fake yellows, there were enough tyre blowouts to go around. Ultimately the caution periods didn't change the outcome at the front, Truex won after leading the most laps, and Harvick was a close second.

I don't mind GWC/Handford-wing style races, it's the length that makes them a problem. If the DW12 had some kind of Michigan 1998-2000 type races, but they were only 200-250miles, I'd watch the entire thing.

My thought of the moment - Robin Miller. I must say - he is the track reporter we all hope we would be, if handed a mike. No BS, no ass kissing, he gets to the point, and isn't shy about calling out the race officials - by name. He's one of the few pit reporters I listen to. It is such a pleasure to read his column.

Now on watching the whole race - I do this, for Indy and F1. And Nascar road races. For the other series, I'll FFD, depending on what's going on.
My a-hole Brother in Law once said he only watches the last few minutes of a basketball game. That's more than I've ever watched, but I thought 'gee - what a fan!' But that tells me he's not a fan. He has money on the game, and only cares about the win or loss of his money.
It's like passing - Nascar has way too much. It's pointless. F1 has too little. In the Montreal race, the excitement was beyond mid pack, where the past champions were stuck. They hardly showed the front runners. No action there, except for Kimi's drama. Indy seems mostly right with passing, except on the fast ovals. The finishes may be exciting, but what's the point if it's just a matter of being in 2nd, on the last lap?

I realize this is the prevailing sentiment concerning the oval dynamics of the DW12 at the Indy 500, but that concept didn't work out so well for Castroneves last year, or Will Power this year, or Sato four years ago.  I forget now who was second for Kanaan's win, but that's still the point:  Kanaan famously said, "On this restart, I'm going for it" despite Cheever and Badyear continually taking year after year about being in "the catbird seat."

Mind you, it DID work for Dan Wheldon in the last pre-DW12 Indy, but that's a different story. :cat:

It takes a bit of cooperation from the guy in front to overtake, it's not that easy. The thing is that for the most of the duration of the race it doesn't really matter if you're in the lead or not, you just want to set yourself up as best as you can for the final stint - not to be too far back, to make it sure you can run at full pace not having to worry about running out of fuel and / or tires etc. Sometimes making it hard for the other guy to overtake you is detrimental to this goal - makes you burn too much fuel. Once the last pitstop is out of the way, the dynamics of the race changes and the fight for each position gets progressively tougher the closer you get to the finish. And on that last lap the guy in the lead will be defending tooth and nail, it certainly won't be an easy overtake if it even happens. Most often it will not.

Pocono seems to be an exception, though.  No matter what you do to the race, the cream somehow always rises to the top.  In a rather tedious way.
