No, it's not Disneyland Paris. It's Moscow baby!

FORMULA E - Round 8: Moscow e-Prix
Event Guide: http://viewer.zmags....27#/251c3927/20

Formula E reaches its penultimate location (than we go to London for the most anticipated EVAH Season Finale's Double Header) of this very encouraging first season of close racing, dramas and Indy-like crazyness.
And it's set to be, maybe, the most stunning one.

Before you ask for info's, take a look at that!

  • MISSED THE LAST RACE, WHAT HAPPENED IN BERLIN?

https://www.youtube....h?v=x5LOO8986dA

Well, it was a calmer race than the most we've seen so far in the championship (Monaco apart), but was special in his own. It was in fact the first non-street circuit of the calendar, set in the backdrop of the Tempelhof Airport.
A more traditional track, that gave us more traditional racing.
Jarno Trulli took a stunning pole position in the morning, but failed to mantain the promises in race trim. At the second corner he lost the position to Lucas Di Grassi, before getting sucked alive by the fast group of cars behind due to some battery management problems.
Di Grassi ran literally away, lapping 1 second faster than anybody else. Meanwhile, Jerome D'Ambrosio managed to climb up to 2th position after a long battle with Nick Heidfeld and Sebastien Buemi.
Podium was uncertain till the last lap, with Nelson Piquet Jr. pushing like crazy in the 2nd stint to gain up the position lost in qualy.

Buemi, anyway, managed to stay in front of the brazilian to complete the podium.

BUT WAIT!

11329975_1028624190499950_80082729525370

Di Grassi got disqualified due to this!!

No, not really. He was actually disqualified from the race, but the real reason were some illegal parts & modifications on his Audi Sport ABT:

1) The front wheel fairing both left and right hand side have been modified with internal metal reinforcing rods.
2) Six of the eight holes in the front wing have been sealed. The remaining two holes having helicoil inserts and chamfers made.
3) Front flap and gurney LH 220 has a filler layer added and chamfer made.

  • UNDERSTOOD..HOW'S THE MOSCOW CIRCUIT THAN?

It looks and feels quite flowing, compared to the previous races. It has fast corners, in-turn breaking, one chicane and two incredibly tight hairpins. Your thoughts?

  • GOOD ENOUGH! THERE'S ANY CHANGE IN THE LINE-UP?

justin_wilson_indycar_1427549275018_1572

Well, there's him!

Justin Wilson joins the Vodka party in Moscow! He will replace Scott Speed in the Andretti Team, pairing with Jean-Eric Vergne.

And another shock replacement! GT racer Antonio Garcia will get behind the China Racing Team wheel again, replacing the disappointing Charles Pic.

Yay Electricty! Yay Russia! Yay Piquet!

Ah I do like the frequency of races in the European leg, much needed after the long gaps between races when flying round the world. Let's have a more dramatic race please, which ideally sets up a 4/5 way title decider in London.

Awesome.  Can't wait.

No fan of Pic, but not sure Garcia was a great pick.  Why not Petrov or Aleshin?  A real opportunity missed there, IMO.

And why isn't Speed racing in Moscow?  Murican problem in Russia? :D

EDIT: come to think of it, Putin himself should have been driving in place of Pic!

So Trulli says his power train will be strong for the next season. But given that they are limited on 150 kw/h of energy, how much of a difference will the rest of the power train actually make? Will it just be weight and center of gravity and those things, or can we expect that there will really be big differences pace wise?

So what's the story now with Formula E and regulations. For this season is everything spec from chassi to powertrain to brakes, suspension and tyres?

Will there be changes for next season where teams can build more of the car themselves and if so then what and what will still be spec? I've heard all kind of things from building their own powertrains and chassis to choose freely on brakes and suspension etc.

The second season will have open powertrain development (that includes cooling, gearbox etc) but everything else will stay spec for now. The next step was supposed to be battery from the third season onward but looks like it could be delayed. As for other parts like aero, suspension or brakes I don't think there are any specific plans so far. It's all about cost control for now.

I remember hearing somewhere that the plan was that by around season 6 or 7 teams would be able to build their own cars around the powertrains. Agag has said before "it's not an aero championship" etc. but it does make sense for teams/constructors to be able to build their own cars around their motors to get the most out of them (fitting it into the existing car will bring its own constraints around packaging, cooling etc) you can always write the regulations so that for instance F1-style front wings or 2008-era F1 bodywork don't spring up.

But yeah, it's actually nice to following a series that (admittedly from the lowest starting point) plans on getting less spec over time.

This could ask some of your questions. Not really new tho (february).

Next year is all about the powertrain development, wich is freezed in Season One. We can expect 3-4 seconds pace improvement. Here manufacturers like Citroen, Renault, Mahindra, can play a decisive role!
Along with that, they will be able to race at 170 KW, rather than limited on 150 KW.

Those numbers are not confirmed officialy, but they have been drafted some time ago by the FIA Motorsport Council.

Current Season: race power limit 150kW; FanBoost 180kW

2015-16: race power limit 170kW; FanBoost 180kW    (less effective fanboost next year)

2016-17: race power limit 200kW; FanBoost 250kW

in HP

Current Season: 200hp; Fanboost 240hp

2015/16: 230hp; Fanboost 240hp

2016/17: 270hp; Fanboost 340hp

Than in Season 3 it should have been the battery development, but it's quite a mistery about it ATM.

Edit: Back to Moscow

Buemi's excited

D'Ambrosio can be aggressive

Super fast all around with big elevation changes, even the chicane is very fast.

Possible rain for the quali tomorrow! Should be clear for the race.

Meanwhile, Dario Franchitti is back! Good track walk with Jack Nicholls here!

Chicane's entry is incredibly narrow. Expect dramas. Bumps everywhere, negative camber fast corners. Some people will taste the walls for sure.

It's ok to be racist if someone's homophobic? I don't get it.

I don't think the thread title was supposed to be offensive, and I don't think referencing a country with a common drink can be equated to racism. I'm sure Putin drinks vodka. Probably lots in the crowd will be.

I wonder if they'll move Formula 1 to this track,or a similar one. It's such an iconic place to have a race.

They do!  Fabulous pair.  SO much better than the IndyCar bunch (even though I love IndyCar), and eons better than the dismal US Formula 1 line-up.

Insanely bumpy circuit, cars are all over the place and the quali mode laps are set to be brilliant.

Circuit has very tight sections. Duval already tasted the wall, while Vergne nearly overcooked it.

Both Dams set the pace, but they were the only to complete a lap in 200 kW. Bruno Senna is the first of the 150 kW

FP2 at 8.30 UK time!

My apologies I realise my post made it sound that way. Perhaps I should have read what I had written before submitting as that is not how I feel. Anyway I've since edited it to be a bit more appropriate.

As for the on track action, I missed FP1, anyone know why Sam Bird had problems?

I'm looking forward to seeing Putin's smug little rodent face on TV again. And some good racing
