I am considering purchasing my first vintage car. A 1980's Toyota Celica. It's garage kept and in very nice shape. Can anyone tell me a little bit about some of the things that I should prepare for when owning a vintage car like this? Are parts available? If something goes wrong, do I always need specific parts or can I use ones that are common or still maufactured?

IF it is 30 y/o it is just classic. Is it arear drive RA40 or front drive?
FWD is not my taste but still worth saving and keeping as a weekend cruiser. The rear drive RA40 were a very tough thing, though here in Oz the trim fell to bits with the sun. Some Japanese models had the 18RG twin cam, or even better 18RG Yamaha head. They were a honker or the day, though a BIG heavy lump of an engine.
Though scrounge bits as those engines can be a drama at times, as are the driveshafts too. Like most 80s FWD cars

Part of it depends on where you are. If you're in the US, basic new parts should be easy to find at any auto parts store (Napa, Advance, O'Reilly, CarQuest, etc.). Salvage yards should have body parts, big pieces such as RWD driveshafts, etc. Rockauto.com has Toyota parts going back to 1958.

Working in a Toyota dealership I can say that parts for older cars are pretty good really. Far better than other brands.

Fun isn't it...however, people on Interweb Fora don't need personal interaction...just a place where they can tap in some random thoughts!
