The ‘At Home’ feature in this weekend’s FT is an interview with Lord March. He’s pictured in his funky office, at a glass desk resting on trestle legs crammed with racing memorabilia.

He makes clear the importance of the motor racing events to the financial health of the estate, and he's keen to 'make Goodwood important in the digital world'.

In the Favourite Thing section is a photograph of Napoleon’s campaign chair, captured 200 years ago next Thursday, and given to the fourth Duke of Richmond by Wellington. The column concludes, ‘But when pushed to choose one object, Lord March opts for a helmet given to him by Dan Gurney, the US racing driver.’

Wow, that's really saying something!

I wonder though, do you know the connection between March and Gurney? I can't recall any...

Here's a link to the article:

(you'll probably need to answer a question about medical problems before they let you read the full article; I ticked 'none of the above' and got in OK)

Sadly, there's no clue in the article about exactly why Lord March treasures the Gurney helmet.

Thank, Tim... could the Indy Eagle from the '90s have any connection? Or even earlier?

Thanks for posting this, Paul.

I was at Revival the year Dan Gurney was the honored driver. It was quite evident that Lord March has a special affection for him, although the reason was not apparent. Certainly, the extent of the honor was quite striking.....aside from the usual parade of cars, etc., March personally interviewed Gurney on a podium on the front straight; the Royal Marine Band played "The Star Spangled Banner", and a flight of P-51 Mustangs did a low altitude pass. Needless to say, this Yank's eyes were a bit misty....must have been from all the smoke....

To this day the "VIVA GURNEY" graffiti on the Tarmac at the start/finish line is still there, and it wouldn't be there if March didn't want it to be.

Thanks for the link, Tim. At the risk of appearing to be a miser, is there a way to get a free look?

I can't think it would be anything other than Dan's support for Goodwood in the early days...similar to Tony Gaze's special place in Lord Marchs heart..

Sorry Jack, but I suspect not. The first couple of times I accessed the article I only had to answer a question about medical conditions I might be suffering from (!) and then it let me in. Now when I try it wants me to pay. I'm guessing that those of you outside the UK don't get the two free views. Maybe someone else knows more.

I have an ft.com subscription. Sometimes there's a 'gift article' option and there was on the Lord March article.

I've emailed it to your bellsouth address. Let me know if you get it.

Best wishes to you and Diane.

I still have a "Dan Gurney For President" bumper sticker on the back of the race car trailer.

I'm an FT subscriber as well, I suspect that the gift article thing is limited, so if Paul's luck runs out on this, happy to help if anyone else would like a copy. It's a very good article, full of interesting stuff.

Thank you for the offer, but Paul has come through like a champ. I used to be an FT subscriber, and then cut back to just the superb weekend edition. Finally, they stopped delivery in my area, subscription only on line, so I let go of it then.
