The FIA apparently thought it was a good idea.

Oh, well it MUST be a good idea then ...

It still seemed a pretty good idea at the Swedish GP in 1976 - a 1-2 finish?

Still a good idea if it was legal. One of the reasons they abandoned the concept was that the tire manufacturer didn't develop the front tires.

And it was both legal and - relatively - succesful but as you say, the tyre manufacturer situation didn't help in 1977.

Tyrrell was 5th (25 points) in the WCC 1975, 3rd (71 points!) in 1976, 6th ( 27 points) in 1977.

In keeping with the weekend.....the loss or redesign of circuits such as the original Osterreichring.

F1 at Dallas and Phoenix

The long wheelbase Ligier in 1982 and rollerskate Brabham in 86

It came within a gnat's crotchet of winning Indy.  They had to change the rules to make it a not-very-good idea.  And the 56B was only at Monza because of the Italian legal system under which anyone is responsible for death other than Italians.

Even so, it ought to have won at Zandvoort in 1971.

Turbines were perfect for Indy. How they were ever expected to succeed in F1 I have no idea.

Schumacher turning into Villeneuve at Jerez '97?

Actually, Schumacher parking it at Rascasse 2006?

I thought the Dallas race was pretty good actually!

Williams signing Alex Zanardi for 1999 was another good idea going south, only Ralf was happy as it made him look undeservingly good, which made him a millionaire.

The thing is that despite his previous time in F1, signing him off the back of his exploits for Ganassi was at the time a great shout... some of the displays of driving Alex put on in those CART years were sometimes truly mind-blowing (Cleveland 97 was a personal favourite of mine, that comeback from the early pitlane mishaps)... he just couldn't transfer those skills from the big, wide, grippy CART cars to the narrower, grooved tyred and more sensitive F1 cars. It was such a shame because what it did was deprive us of more Alex in CART as well as feeling bad for a guy hopelessly mismatched to his car in F1.

(1) The Circuit de Catalunya

(2) Getting Pele to wave the chequered flag

(3) Getting Nelson Piquet to do post race driver interviews (although why anyone thought that was a good idea  )

Starting the 1978 Italian GP before ALL the cars had lined up and stopped on the grid ):

God, that never looked like a good idea!

Wish I hadn't read that as it made me look up the race, and I've seen things now that I didn't want to (Peterson's crash) but also seen some astonishing bravery.  One thing that really struck me was how poor the camera work was compared to today's motion stabilised cameras

Taken a break from 1989 to revisit it in my archive and it's worse (in terms of timing) than I remember, Andretti and Villeneuve on the front row (the only two cars in shot) barely get stationary themselves - if they do it's for no more than literally one second - let alone everyone behind them.
