Were David Purleys' crash helmets black or just very dark blue? In some pictures The Griffins he wore in 1976 and 77' look like they maybe dark blue but the Bell he used in 1973 looks to me like its black?

Definitely dark blue, the same blue as his Lec on sponsored cars.

I have a very good reason for knowing this.....

Funnily enough I have just posted some bits on Facebook about this. As a lad,and keen karter, I wanted a Griffin helmet, and my chum at Gordon Spice arranged for me to see a "top of the range" one, and I was taken from Eastbourne (where I lived) to Bognor, to meet David, and look at the helmet and try it on. Most definitely dark blue. To this day I regret not getting him to sign the business card he gave me

Thank you both for your replies.   The helmet thing had been bugging me on and off for years so i'm grateful to you both for clearing that one up.   My farther knew David well and I was fortunate to see him race on a few occasions.   At the end of the 1976 season David gave me a photograph of him in his championship winning Chevron, which I still have and, unlike Steve, I did get him to sign it!
