I like it. But there's no way they would look that smooth and clean, unless the rules were so restrictive that basically every car is the same.

Why?

I am not sure that there is anything that would 'end' F1 for me. Unless it stopped.

Another pointless whar f1 could be rendering by a wannabee f1 designer but im not graphics artist. Is 1 thread like this per day not enough?

What a negative comment. This guy produces some of the most amazing renderings and I for one really enjoy his ideas and concepts.

No i dont. I actually like the esthetics of the renderings. They just dont belong in a racing comments forum because it has no relation to actual racing.

I don't really care what the cars look like.. I don't see how the cars in the OP are any better or worse than the cars now.  In some ways, it's better, more sleek looking or more modern.  But it all means nothing.

It's not a fashion contest.  It's a car race.  The racing matters most.  It's a sport.. that means the drivers being tested against one another and fighting it out.. if that's intact, I don't really care what the cars look like.  You want there to be power behind their right foot, you want high speed in the corners, you want it to be tricky... (if there isn't someone hitting the wall during the race, it means driving them is too easy).

You want them running the edge between being too careful (slow) and being too close to the limit (hitting the wall).  And you want them fighting it out for 30 mins or 90 mins.. right on that edge.  No managing, no breaks or rests.. no relaxing and reading a magazine.. no directions from the pitwall.. just fighting, driving, battling and going hard.  You win, or you fail.. but either way to be on that edge is the true test of skill.  Wet races have this, but dry races are stale by comparison, where everything is too easy.  And too much cruising around, and management.

They need to be right on that edge between success and failure, and we get excited and watch to find out who can manage it better and come out on top at the end of 90 minutes.

If you have that.. seriously, who gives a **** whether there is a canopy or not?

Take it to the mods, then. There's not really another place for art threads on this forum, so they end up here (see a previous thread about retro liveries on modern cars).

Which designer pissed in you cereal?

Edit: car design in intimately related to racing and to look forward is what we always do. Silly season, new entries, exits, futue calendars, etc.

Although the images look very cool and aggressive, I doubt that F1 will ever come to this. And if so, what would the visual differences be between F1 and WEC?

Funny how the car is otherwise futuristic but then the nose and the front wing have teleported from an old McLaren. Add that retro livery... clickbait for nostalgia hungry fans.

This guy's previous rendering (http://andriesvanove...rmula-1-concept) looked a bit more realistic.

Looks a helluva lot better than that hideous Ferrari concept they came up with.

My goodness, I would hate to have a dinner conversation with a lot of the people in here. What a bunch of dull killjoys. "This guy clearly doesn't understand aerodynamics."

He's not designing next year's mclaren entry. It's just a rendering of what someone thinks is cool. I hope you all don't take a child drawing and remark "that looks nothing like a person."

/rant

Thank you for posting that. It's a very pretty shape. I love the idea of a closed canopy in the sport. I've posted in another thread about how I would like to see the them continue testing closed canopy, because I think it might have some real safety benefits. Besides the only real argument against not trying it is "but we've always had open cockpits "

The problem is not that it isn't cool or pretty enough. The problem is that gives false hope for people or a tool for "they should look this!" argument when it is not a very realistic depiction. Renders are designed to look good... actual race cars are designed to be fast.

I wouldn't mind either if it meant they could go faster because of it, otherwise, what is the need to change and make it safer? Motorbike riders are always exposed, don't know why F1 must always be safer than they have been.

Motorbike racers are exposed so that they can be thrown clear of accidents are they not? A bike isn't nearly big enough to absorb impacts like a car is, certainly while the riders legs are wrapped round it.

I'd love to see a team design a car with a canopy to the current regulations, just to see what a true representation of one would look like. I know we had Adrian Newey's attempt a few years back, but that wasn't to any rules, and looked bloody ugly.

The render above is gorgeous, just needs a bigger front wing, maybe a slightly longer nose. I'm sure the creator is far more qualified in both aesthetics and F1 than me, though! And it needs to be orange and gunmetal grey. But that's just me.

Wired ran an article with comments by Craig Scarborough saying that, aside from a few tweaks, they are very feasible designs.

So it appears that it is you who doesn't understand the concept of engineering or aerodynamics.

I'm not arguing that, but they are hideous.
