I've re-read Murray Walker's autobiography recently and he mentions one race all three of the above commentated on at Brands Hatch sometime in the early 80s with Jackie and James not exactly hitting it off.  Does anyone know what race this was and if you can watch it (legally) online anywhere?

I have tried a lot of Googling and YouTubing but can't seem to track it down, if anyone here knows I'd appreciate it!

i believe its the 1980 British GP where James admonishes JYS when the latter attempts to give a driver's perspective , with something along the lines of 'Its changed a bit since your day Jackie'. Unfortunately for James Jackie had driven the spare Tyrrell 010 out of session earlier in the meeting (i remember seeing this at the time), fitted with a camera i think, and so he was able to backup his comments to James  (and those watching) as being very up to date indeed! Is it not on You Tube? I thought it was?

Hunt's 'day' was only three years after Stewart's retirement, so maybe he wasn't being entirely serious. You have to get up early in the morning to get one over JYS, and I suspect Hunt wasn't an early riser!

Yeah but, Hunt only retired in 79, and thus had a full half year in GE cars. JYS finished in 73, so had no experience of actually racing them. Having said that, I always thought Hunt was over-rated as an 'expert'. But not as much as Muddy Talker as a Commentator

Be fair.  When you were dozing in front of the TV after Sunday lunch you could rely on Murray's rising volume to alert you when something was happening.    ;)

Or perhaps not. As Clive James once said of Murray Walker, “Even in moments of tranquillity, Murray Walker sounds like a man whose trousers are on fire”.

What's a 'GE' car? Did you mean turbos succeeding 3 litre DFVs? Don't remember the 1980 British GP coverage as I was there, but recent reruns of the era on Sky reminded me that they had a lot more atmosphere Hunt certainly started in F1 season after Stewart finished.

Rob29 - GE is Ground Effects where the underside of he car is used to create downforce. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_78 https://en.wikipedia...d_effect_(cars)

Re the OP, I actually remember this, I think. JYS says some driver's tyres are going off and he will be looking in the mirror at his rears. James says you are showing your age, cannot see the tyres in current cars, JYS replies that he drove a current car the other day, meanwhile Murray interrupts them both to say the lead has changed! Well that's how I remember it from 1980, if anyone had the time to watch the race I'd love to hear it again!

BTW, I came across this the other day, an F3 race James was in (Crystal Palace), and Murray commentating, 10 years later they would be sharing a mic.  (sorry don't know how to embed youtube)
