Thought this would be an interesting twist to the usual 'rate the race' threads we see on here for F1, and with some pretty good showings from sportscars, Formula E, and Indycar, I thought this would be a good month to start the thread.

Object of the thread is simple: vote for what you thought was the best race this month and maybe get a chance to talk about why you liked it with others on here. I only listed as many races as I could remember, mostly from major series; if there's something you don't see on here that you think should be, let me know. Maybe we can get a tradition going. :)

24 hours of Le Mans just because it is the Highlight of the year and this race was quite remarkable with the surprising victory of the 3rd Porsche car. The racing was also brilliant.

I also liked the Moto GP race this weekend: with the climax in the last chicane ;)

Easy one- Indycar at Fontana. Barely a lap where you didn't flinch, fantastic racing, a lack of multiple yellows that can spoil races, and 100% relief when it was over without any injury to all involved. I kind of feel I 'survived' it too... so fantastic yes, but Indycar is probably pushing it's luck if it has more races like it. Second best race of the year, behind the Indy 500.

IndyCar in Fontana. I took some deep breaths when that one finished Saturday night, and am still taking them.

I voted for Le Mans 24 hrs, but this is in all likely hood a very bias vote as I am a Hulk fan.

Not biased at all.  I am not a Hulkenberg fan and I voted for Le Mans.  It was a classic fight, not just for the LMP1s but for all classes.

And Hulkenberg did very well indeed.

Several very good races - Le Mans, London FE race 2, Fontana..........

And yet I voted Indycar Honda Toronto!

A little surprising considering I only watch IndyCar and F1 on a regular basis, but for me the MotoGP race at Assen wins hands down.

That 500 miles in Fontana - racing porn: 4 and even 5-wide fight fight for lead, epic overtakes, many controversy

Robin Miller:

Nowadays, the cars and tracks are safer than could ever be imagined back in the day when Parnelli, A.J., Lone Star J.R., Mario and Uncle Bobby ran the Midwest fair circuit with light poles a couple feet from the groove, no roll cages and dust so thick a driver couldn't see 10 feet in front of him. Or when Dan Gurney was lapping Spa or the Nurburgring at 175mph with trees serving as guardrails.

And what we witnessed Saturday at Auto Club Speedway was somewhere between the measured insanity of the 1960s and a jaw-dropping display of reflexes and reaction at 220mph.
It was incredible theatre, with a record 80 lead changes among 14 of the 23 drivers and three hours of intensity that's hard to be imagined or duplicated.

In terms of pure excitement, it ranks as one of the best ever. And it wasn't a Handford Device race from the CART era where nobody wanted to lead and passing was so artificial. It also wasn't one of those old IRL pack races where eight rows of two ran in formation for 30 laps.

Saturday's MAVTV 500 seemed to have four or five grooves on any lap and non-stop diving, dipping, chopping and filling holes.

Le Mans 24 hours, while IndyCar Fontana was the most exciting to watch, it wasn't the best racing, but more the most dangerous racing, very entertaining tough.

The 2015 Le Mans 24 hours was good but nothing special compared to other years.

Assen was the best.

Great ideea Afterburner, cheers

My top 5 this month:

1. Le Mans 24 Hours - this race for me is the ultimate highlight of the year, any year.

2. Indycar, Fontana - my nails are broken, still.

3. MotoGP, Assen - old school duel.

4. Formula E, London #2 - cool little first finale.

5. WTCC, Moscow #2 - yea, I know all about this series's rep but check this race out for yourself:

I haven't got to watch the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen or that Blancpain Endurance race over at Paul Ricard but I intend to watch the replays so maybe they'll get to creep into the top five.

Shout-outs:

For the feelgoods: Nascar, Pocono - just because I am a Truex fan.

For the wtfs: Formula 3, Spa - just because of the disdainful racing.

Dutch TT and Indycar at Fontana are the stand outs.

The Senior TT at the Isle of Man gets my vote. Incredibly exciting.

I really tried to hype me up for LeMans;

visually it is always fascinating (have to go there one day), but from the suspense, F1 with livetiming beats it even with the dullest year of the race.

only my opinion

LeMans. Always nice to watch and follow once a year.

MotoGP Assen was very tense with the battle between Marquez and Rossi

Fontana: It was 01.00 here when I went to sleep, it seems just before the crashes. :S

I've only watched the F1 races and Le Mans from that list - voted for Le Mans. Only watched bits of it in years gone by but found the cars very impressive to watch. More so than current F1 cars.

I enjoyed the DTM race the other day too.

1. MotoGP Assen. The top class race was excellent because my favorite rider won a classic duel on a classic track, but the Moto 3 race was absolutely epic, 7 guys swapping the lead for the entire race. It was like the Monza F1 slipstreaming of the late 60s but on bikes.

2. Le Mans, just because it's such an exciting build up, and because Porsche beat Audi. The actual race itself isn't ever quite what you hope it will be, with a few exceptions.

3. Indycar Fontana. Edge of the seat, heart racing, cringing and holding my breath constantly (especially with Sato forcing gaps that don't exist), absolutely incredible stuff. Still, oval racing will never win for me over a couple of classic road races like Assen and LM.

Le Mans and by some margin.

Neither of the F1 races warrant a place on the list they were so awful!

The Le Mans 24h has to be my favourite; there's nothing quite like it. I saw almost all of it this year - though there was this bit between 02:00 and 04:00 that I can't quite place - and was entertained throughout.

I also enjoyed the F1 Austrian Grand Prix and the Indycar race in Toronto, which is the most recent Indycar I've had time to watch. I heard from a friend that the MotoGP race in Assen was quite exciting as well, but bike racing just isn't my cup of tea.

I voted Fontana because it scared me... and as Eleanor Roosevelt said...

By the way, the idea of this thread is terrific. And when we look at the full list, we able to find more than one very good race to make the sundays worthwile. So I suggest next time we be able to vote for more than one race. Mainly because some of them are entirely different yet very exciting.

For example, I loved both MotoGP at Assen and NASCAR at Sonoma but tracing a direct comparision wouldn't do justice to either.

edit: and it's entirely disappointing yet true that I didn't even feel half tempted to vote for either F1 race.

Le Mans 24 hours without a doubt.

Race of the month in May: Indy500.

Glad to see the positive feedback here--thanks everyone. :)

So even though the 24 Hours of Le Mans is maybe the race I most look forward to every year, I wasn't as enthused by it this year. Maybe it was Fox's sub-par coverage and the fact that I heard more of it over radio than I did on screen, or that the #7 Audi kept having issues every time it looked like challenging Porsche.

My pick for this month is the much-talked-about Indycar race in Fontana. In case you're curious what all the hub-bub is about, look no further--yes, I know it's an oval, but I used to hate ovals and I promise this'll be two of the best-spent hours of your racing life.  ;)

Phenomenal stuff. Indycar.
