I wouldn't mind this at the classic races (Spa, Silverstone, Monaco, Suzuka) as a way of distinguishing them from the other races, but surely a DNF or bad result will cause too many problems for drivers so the races will be really cautious.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 17:47
Just make it a 1 hour qualifying, with no stupid impeding rules, fastest lap during the hour takes Pole.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 17:49
Stupid idea. Rather bring back 1 hour qualifying and qualy tyres.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 17:49
I don't want to be overly negative. but this sounds like a horrible idea. The process is far too complicated and long-winded for the viewer.
F1 needs to make changes, but the race weekend format is not an area where change is needed (IMO)

no thank u
Posted 02 July 2015 - 17:51
Oh FFS.
Yes, that's what's needed to fix F1. More predictability that fewer people will watch...
How do these people stay in business...?
Posted 02 July 2015 - 17:56
Current qualifying format is one of the best in whole motorsport at the moment, so let's change it. Obviously.
Once again it shows that people in charge of things have just no idea about anything.

Sprint race for the reserve drivers of the teams - but they don't know with which cars and don't know how to handle the extra costs.

Biggin Hill, yesterday:
Everyone else: "We have a massive problem with costs, fans are being priced out, some hate the engine sound and our engine development regulations need adjusting. Where shall we start?"
Strategy Group: "LET'S FIX QUALIFYING AND HAVE A SATURDAY RACE!!!1111!"
Great job guys.

Can't they go back to the 1996-2002 format?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !
...don't fix what isn't broken damn idiots !
Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:09
Urge no no no. And how will the initial grid on Saturday be worked?
Obviously a reverse grid from the previous race result positions. :/

It honestly seems like to me they are trying to make F1 less popular to drive down its worth!!!
Change the Aero so cars can follow closely. Allow teams to develop so they can at least try and catch up the leaders. Get rid of all the gimmicks. Spread the huge wealthy generated more evenly so the sport is sustainable for everyone (including the tracks)..
Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:20
I've never really been convinced about this current qualifying system. Ok, there are cars on the track most of the hour but you don't really get to see the cars doing their lap as it all happens at once.
I quite enjoyed the split sessions from a few years ago where the driver had the track to themselves and took turns. You got to really appreciate the driving and it would encourage more onboard footage usage.

Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:43
No, no and one more time NO.
Why oh why would they tinker with what we have currently? Keep qualifying as it is, this system works better than any of the previous systems in my opinion, the 1hr system had large gaps of no action and there wasn't always the climax there is with this particular format where it always goes down to the wire.
Keep the race on Sunday like it always has been, stop trying to make F1 more gimmicky. Address issues such as ticket prices, hosting fees and for 2017 less restrictive engine regs and aero that allows cars to follow each other closely. It's like these people are completely blind and oblivious to the real issues that need to be tackled.
Yep with all the things that need to be improved/fixed in F1, they decide to change the one thing that is perfectly fine as it is...
What's next? Square-shaped tyres?

I'll gladly see a short race on saturdays, I mean racing is what we all follow the sport for!
However,I will see both sides of the coin. For that not to be just a one hour race with zero overtaking to secure a grid spot for sunday, they need to hand out points. And the question is whether that takes away some of the traditional "meaning" of a Grand Prix.
No one would be keen on a driver securing the championship on a saturday before the GP.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:46
I have a hard time understanding how the Strategy Group can meet repeatedly and not come up with anything addressing the issues facing the sport, yet create fixed on non-existing problems. These are not dumb people, some of them are very bright, what is it that makes so out of touch with what the fan base is asking for?
Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:51
Casual viewers: "So is the race on Saturday or on Sunday? Who cares, I'm gonna watch some porn."
Racing enthusiasts: "This is the worst rule change ever since... well two weeks ago."
Bernie Ecclestone: "$$$$$$$ Wait. No $$$$$$? This format sucks, who even asked for it?"
Tv broadcasters: "This little train of cars that can't overtake each other is exiting! Uh, uh, there's a breaking news: apparently no one in the paddock likes it, so it sucks. Let's talk about how much this is exitingly bad with the hashtag #F1orGP2
Teams: "It costs too much! We need three races per weekend!"
McLaren: "We are sure we'll unlock the potential on Sunday's race."

AMus is report this

just read the AMUS article,
Sprint race with the reserve drivers, LOL, who cares about the reserve drivers, also the costs (more cars (or do you want the reserve drivers smashing the race cars of HAM and comapny )... and the other knee jerk reactions for 2015 and 2016 well, could have been worse (the clutch thing is a bizarre move, to do what? have more stalled cars and re-enact a Paletti http://www.f1fanatic...prix-flashback/) ???
and 2017 most likely 200cm wide cars with wide tyres and 180cm wide side pods (what will they be filled with, fuel and a reserve driver )?, based on the secret Red Bull design study (at least that, not that hideous Ferrari thing)...
Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:53
What the **** is this? One of the few areas that the vast majority of fans agree does not need a change, and then they go and plan to ruin it! My enjoyment of F1 has been waning as of late: changing from a one-race format is another big blow to it for me.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:54

go and watch something like Handball, many goals!
Posted 02 July 2015 - 18:59
Actually, I don't have a problem with this... You would use the current qualifying system to qualify for this race, and then get a chance to maybe improve your standing for raceday.
What would be really fun is if they don't allow drivers to use DRS during this one hour race.
It will, if nothing else, show haters how much of a difference DRS makes to races these days. Then maybe some people can shut up about it being terrible, once and for all.

What a ridiculous idea. I love F1, I love the races, i love watching the practice. BUT I DONT WANT ANOTHER RACE! Its a ridiculous idea that adds nothing to the event. Qualifying is the chance to watch the cars at their purist - one lap, low fuel, man vs the track, banzai lap. A race is a mix of on track batle against other drivers and a chess match. Both are equally fascinating to a supporter of the sport. What we dont need is some pointless race that in reality does nothing other than use up the engines and probably give the naysayers something to complain about because it was boring.
I miss the old 1hr 12 laps qual format. The current one is the next best option so I guess we keep it with some tweaks. What you need to do is separate out performance from qually to that of the race. The fact that the cars have to go into the race on the same tyres, same settings etc as they qualified in means that it limits the possibility of changing things up in the race. Now that the chance of qually engines is impossible due to current engine regs, lets remove parc ferme. Allow the drivers to make changes to the cars after qualifying. That way you may mix up performance levels. Hell, bring back Sunday morning warm up - there is no downside to such a thing. People at the track get to see the cars again, something extra for TV companies to show, additional chance for sponsors to have their car seen and a chance for the drivers to further refine their setups (or mess them up).
This will never happen sadly.

I have to tell you, some of these ideas are driving me away from the sport. Each year, each race becomes less important.
The goal is to determine the World Driving Champion and the World Constructors' Champion, everything should be structured towards that one ideal. Each nation one race, the results accumulated to determine who deserves to wear the crown that year. So when anyone proposes some sideshow gimmick that detracts and dilutes that ultimate goal, it becomes less of a legitimate sport and more WWE/entertainment.
And the insane part is such a concept will introduce more problems, higher costs, resources being stretched even further, so much more complicated.
FFS there's lots of support races during a Formula One weekend, on Sunday alone there is the GP3, GP2, and Porsche Mobil Supercup at Silverstone before the big event.
The groups supposed to guide the future of Formula One and find solutions to the most pressing issues are at an impasse on those critical items such as budget ceilings, and are instead proposing Mickey Mouse distractions because they have run out of ideas.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 19:12
If they do this then it'll free my Saturday's up as I have no interest at all in watching a qualifying race, I love the current qualifying session.

Oh my god, can they ruin F1 even further? Apparently they can.
At the moment there is absolutely nothing wrong with how the F1 weekends have been formatted. It's everytihng else that's wrong and is making the fans walk away from the sport.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 19:24
OMG it gets even worse, Was just told that one of the proposals is to reverse the top 8 from the Saturday race when putting together the grid for the Sunday race
Posted 02 July 2015 - 20:33
Worst idea ever. Really, I would just stop watching that crap if they changed the qualifying to sprint race or something like that.
Posted 02 July 2015 - 20:37

Lottery?
