Hi all,
I'm interested in magazine advert of Jim Clark.
Especially his racing items include gloves, shoes and Jacket etc…
I remember I've seen his Jacket advert on magazine.
But I can not remember the magazine and could not find on web too.
If anyone know the magazine advert, Please let me know.
Maybe French company made one at that time.
I very much appreciate your cooperation.

Thank you.

I'm sure there used to be adverts for 'JC' mogographed gloves and shoes in Motorsport in the mid '60s. I don't recall jackets though. The J and the C were overlapping on te logo

Will have a look through a few issues later on.

Hiro,

JC did some promotional work for a UK manufacturer of light-weight raincoats and jackets called "Gannex" (these were also worn at the time by UK Prime minister Harold Wilson). I have been unable find  the photo you are looking for but remember it well.

As Al mentions above,Jim also was involved (presumably he received a royalty on each pair sold?) with the sale if driving gloves with an embroidered patch with the initials JC; these can be seen clearly in some of the photos in Peter Darley's excellent book "Jim Clark, Life at Team Lotus", for example on page 100.

Perhaps Graham Gauld or Peter Darley can give more information, both of them are members here.

I think he did some adverts for the Ford Corsair with Jean Shrimpton.  I've also seen a captioned as "A publicity shot of Jim serving petrol at the Northern Garage that he bought at at Tweedmouth just outside Berwick-upon Tweed."

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I know 'JC' gloves and the adverts made by INTERIOR SILENT TRAVEL LTD.

There were two type available. I’ve never heard light-weight raincoats and jackets called "Gannex".

If you can arrange to take the advert pics, please let me know.

Finally I found an information of the jacket, It’s made by MOSSANT, PARIS. I think I saw an advert of magazine before.

But I’ve never reached the pics. I expect more information and pics from you.

Thank you.

Have you seen the ads for Martini & Rossi?

I have some of them in issues of Car & Driver and Road & Track from the '60s, but don't recall them appearing in magazines here in the UK. They took the form of a series of short articles (usually half-page ads) supposedly describing Clark's views on different aspects of race driving - rather than directly extolling the virtues of vermouth. I've never heard who actually wrote them - assuming that Clark didn't.

I don't recall any period official Jim Clark branded jackets as I'd almost certainly have bought one!  This ad claims to be authentic but looks a bit dodgy to me, especially with the yellow/green helmet logo, still, have a look http://www.lemagasin...g-team-jacket/

Mossant were famous french hatters but the name is also associated with ski-wear however, I think, well after Jim's death.  We all had the gloves (except Black Jack fans who weren't too concerned about the welfare of kangaroos :well: )

Edit typo.

Style just doesn't look right to me either. The design looks to be mimicking café racer bike leathers - see for example some of the vintage Belstaffs, like this one on Leather Monkeys, which they think was originally tan. And while the yellow-green could say 'Lotus', it looks more like BP to me.

If I had to guess, I'd say this was something made for a fashion show - maybe even a fashion student's 'graduate piece'?

I've searched through period adverts on several possible newspaper databases - The Times, Sunday Times, Guardian/Observer, Irish Times - but the only ones in which Jim appears are for Esso and publicity for his 'better driving' column in the Observer Magazine (which I assume was ghost-written by a certain Mr Gauld?)

Yeah, lots of 'coat-tail' ads as you say, Esso, Lotus, Ferodo, Prestone, Girling, Scalextric etc.  The Autolite ad is a bit more personally focused-

The jacket in question was never worn trackside by JC or any other team member as far as I remember.

The advert was in the french magazine "Champion" in March or April 1968. There was also something in the May issue.

I have found a photo of Jim Clark wearing the Gannex coat but I have no idea how to paste it here, having scanned it from a book I only seem to be able to save as a.pdf file.  Help!

It seems that my memory might be slightly at fault in thinking that JC actually was paid to promote these garments; the caption (by Reg Harris, World Champion cyclist and Jaguar D-type racer) says "Jim Clark kindly helping me to promote Gannex".

Speaking of advertising the Corsair thsi is one of my favourite JC videos. Did you ever think you would see JC flickiig it up through the gears with a steering column shift?

I noticed that Clark checked out the pedals for heel-and-toe suitability. I wonder if that, or the five-bearing crankshaft was the headline feature that won over the customers?

That must be the earliest filming at Longcross MVEE test track that I have seen. I guess Ford had a lot of clout even with the military.  Not sure where the footage on the airfiield was shot though

Boreham, at a guess as (a) it's not far from Dagenham and (b) Ford's competition department was based there around the time the film was made.

Probably only available to view if you are logged in as a member of Autodiva. Here it is:

clark%20jacket.jpeg

It looks very similar to the one Sebastian found, but it's not identical  Note the stud fasteners and the larger collar. The fabric looks thicker too - possibly even padded.

But which Dunlop Bridge is that in the background? Could it be Surfer's Paradise? It would fit for the date of the magazine.

Pictures of Jim show that Firestone logo on his helmet peak in 1967 - certainly at Indianapolis, Zandvoort, Silverstone and Watkins Glen. I've also found it on this one from Warwick Farm in 1968.

Not visible at Kyalami 1968 though.

Sorry to be so late in getting on to this. I certainly did not know about the French jacket but Jimmy did sign up with the Westover shoe company that produced a lightweight driving shoe under his name. I wore a pair of them for ages and they were very comfortable and then they stopped producing them.

I have attached a photo taken in his garden at Edington Mains where he demonstrated the dimpled surface of the shoe.

Hi Graham, Nice to hear from you. Yes, I know the Jim Clark shoe by Westover.
I would like to see one if I have a chance. Probably impossible! Does anyone have?
When does it came up and stopped producing?
Speak to you soon.
