Dear all,

I came across the picture below on an Italian forum dedicated to Ayrton Senna. It seems to have been taken in Hungary and features Ayrton behind the wheel of a McLaren I've never seen before. It seems to be based on the MP4/5, but does anyone have more info on the car?

Ferrari tried a very similar airbox setup on the 640 in the first couple of races, the car that Mansell won in Brazil with had this kind of air intake for the engine. I'm guessing McLaren tried to get some aerodynamic gain by doing the same (removing the airbox and getting more air onto the rear wing).

Might it be Suzuka, and the MP4/4-derived V10 test car?

I'm pretty positive it's not, Michael - because that one had an airbox above the driver's helmet. See for yourself:

I guess the picture showing Senna in the McLaren with the Ferrari´ish airbox might be taken at the 1989 pre saison testing at Estoril.
