The highlights are being shown on Motors TV, the Freeview channel we all get on our digiboxes in the UK:

I was impressed to see ex-BTCC driver Matt Neal win the pre-66 GP event in a Cooper he'd first driven the day before.

Err, Motors TV is only available on HD Freeview, not on regular Freeview.

Matt Neal's heroism, racing a car that he first drove on the previous day, needs to be put into perspective. Jack Brabham flew home from a world championship race, heated engine parts in the family cooker overnight, and flew back so that the Australian Bake Off goodies could be fitted before the race started.

And of course it was Tim Harvey and not Matt Neal who was driving the Cooper at the Silverstone Classic - I'll edit my original dopey posting

And only in certain parts of the country. Still not available here in West Yorkshire.

They seem determined to only use the most obscure broadcasting techniques available to them and are completely averse to putting up an online stream for UK fans who cannot get their broadcasts.

It is probably deliberate, you might be surprised to know that the BBC and ITV have reduced their signal strength in Europe, presumably to stop people viewing their channels on other providers.

I am sure it will be made available once the horseless carriage reaches West Yorkshire.

The highlights shown on Motors TV do not seem to include either the F1 races or the big banger sports car races (unless I have been unlucky in only tuning in when other races are televised). Interestingly the ITV one hour programme does feature both these types of races prominantly - maybe that is why Motors TV do not feature them.

Actually the ITV programme was not bad with racing very much to the fore with Martin Haven commentating on the races and the very competent Louise Goodman handling the intro, links and interviews.

The Motors TV coverage seemed to be using the circuit commentators, rather than a special TV person.  The 'have they reached you yet' stuff was a little wearing when you could see what was happening on the screen, the commentators often being a little behind the action.  Haven was better - an underrated chap, I feel.  He should be promoted to F1 coverage so that he can be crucified like the others!

Ok but it was the usual unimaginitive effort which treated the event  as if the results of the races were the be all and end all.More on why drivng the cars is so different to modern day cars illustrated by in car shots(slipstreaming , proper gearboxes  etc) and also some more history on particular cars  and drivers would be good .

That's fine, John -- positive thinking. It would be great to have cameras in the paddock, vox pop with attendees, garage analyses of great cars. If you have ever been vox popped on the street, you'll know that -- surprise -- you have nothing to say about something completely disconnected with your thoughts. Successful vox pop interviews are the result of tapping dozens of people on the shoulder. Expensive.

And garage analyses of great cars? Race commentators know the grid in general, but when there are so many replicas around, you'd be confident to stand next to Fangio's Ferrari and pronounce that it was the winning car. Garage analysis requires that somebody checks facts before reciting seller blurb in front of a camera.

Talk about the technology, pop down to preparation outfits and describe how two 1950s F2 cars have different gearboxes. Pull apart F3 and F2 cars from the 1970s or 1980s, and explain how technology and economics and marketing worked for different designers.

I found it dull as there was little continuous racing (at most three races had more than a brief snapshot) and a commentator of the sort who uses "the No 1 car" and "the white car" rather than naming them.

Self-congratulatory speeches by the organisers and rock and roll "music" don't interest me, so those were some wasted minutes too.

More bumping and boring than I expected (or liked), possibly because many of the drivers are modern saloon racers where that is normal.

I found the ITV4 highlights programme fine as a snapshot of the event, it gave a taster of some of the racing and the clips of the off track activity added atmosphere. A good programme for typical family viewers.

I also enjoyed all the Motors TV coverage which was pretty comprehensive and the commentary described the action well enough.

Not being particularly grumpy but ...

I did notice that Louise Goodman gushed something to the effect that Silverstone is now the best classic motoring festival in the world.

Do hope that won't colour Lord March's attitude next time she tries to blag some free Goodwood passes.

Well,  the Classic  doesn't cost me an arm and a leg (and that's just for the accommodation). I don't have to dress up to create some parody of the  past, there is a low hooray count, I can park on the infield , I can go to pit garages without belonging to a 'Club' which exists solely to charge me even more money , I can watch cars from at least seven decades (rather than three) and I run a far lower risk of bumping into Robert Coucher hanging out with his  D list sleb mates . I adore Goodwoood as a circuit , even though most spectators last time I went seem unaware it isn't actually mandatory to watch between Chicane and Madgwlck and some of the cars are superb. The key difference is that Silverstone feels like a place for people who like racing cars  to mingle with other people who like the same thing whereas Goodwood feels like a pantomime  held on Planet Smug .  Sorry. :)

Sorry but I didn't rate the ITV4 highlights programme at all.  Most of the races had just a few seconds of coverage and there were very few driver interviews.
