TUDOR United Sportscar Championship Round 8 of 12: Lime Rock Park
A short-notice thread for a short-track race.
Yeah, yeah, we've got that freaky twenty-four hour massage/facial/skin 'exfoliation'/running-out-of-innuendos thing going on in some forest in Europe right now, but don't forget about 'Murica!
Totally not pandering to the lowest common denominator here. Not one bit.
Round 8 of the Tudor United Sportscar Championship aka 'Variable-Length B#%&ch Session About DPs and American Racing While Cars Inconspicuously Circulate in the Background' commences in a little under two hours. The series will have to find a new name this weekend, as its hottest topic won't even be doing the rounds; today's race will feature only the PC and GTD classes, whose illustrious rosters have included renowned names such as Gaston Kearby and Martin Plowman. I'm reduced to using 'names' as a descriptor because I couldn't think of anything more spectacular to call them.
Series fan-favourite Christina Nielsen is also competing in the 007 Aston Martin this weekend. Try to contain your excitement.
The only thing I tend to remember about this track is that Honda's ARX-03a owned everything a few years ago when it came back from three laps down to win. I'm not posting a video for fear you'll watch that instead of the race, you cold-hearted series-killer.
Not that coming back from three laps down would be a particularly noteworthy achievement here:
If the race is boring you, try unraveling the paradox of the mysterious 'no name straight'. Successfully doing so may cause you to travel back in time.
Nestled in the hills of a little town whose name resembles a command (though I'm still not sure what an 'icut' is) Lime Rock Park has been a staple of American racing for years, having been driven by legends such as Mario Andretti and Stirling Moss. At 1.5 miles, the laps are going to tick by faster than you can say 'full-course yellow'. Most classes here will lap around sub-50 seconds, which means there's going to be twice as many opportunities as normal for an am driver to ignore blue flags and go all DRACONE on his pursuers.
At the very least, we'll finally get an answer to the age-old sportscar racing question, 'are moving chicanes still moving chicanes if you remove all the faster cars?' Somehow I have a feeling the answer is still going to be 'yes'.
IMSA 'employs' its own 'Nigerians' to manage streaming for its series--you can watch the whole race right here, no questions asked! Just be sure to include your routing number and mailing address.

Green flag is at 3:15 PM/15:15 hours local time. If you're not sure how to translate that into your language, use this thing! (Hint: it's in about one-hour and forty-five minutes from the thread start time.)
See you guys when the green flag drops!

Not all the classes show up at every race on the calendar, though they all run the same number of rounds. I assume this is for cost reasons as the new merged series has more races per year than either ALMS or Grand-Am did in their last years. Why is there no LMP2, DP or GTLM?
Plus, this track is probably a little tight for a four-class race, especially with two pro-am classes in the mix.

Ah makes sense I guess. You have Long Beach where it's just the LMP2, DP and GTLM but they're the best classes so you don't mind.
A PC/GTD race only isn't the most exciting prospect is it?

Well, those are both pro-am classes, so it raises the Abnormal Chaos Factor by a few points anytime the am drivers are behind the wheel. It's a formula that seems to work for series like Indycar.Ah makes sense I guess. You have Long Beach where it's just the LMP2, DP and GTLM but they're the best classes so you don't mind.

And the Viper gets whacked by Starworks as Christina closes in.

Alas, I'm not watching this either. But I care about it enough at least to check in here and see how you're doing!

The only reason I am keeping an eye on this is because of our Christina, otherwise, I'll watch it on catchup because of Spa 24

Well her best friend has a time-travelling spaceship.

Can't say this has been the most exciting race, but I probably won't get tired of hearing Hindy say 'Guasch' anytime soon. At least F1 will have something that's on par with its excitement level this weekend.
EDIT: Of course, as I say that, we've got a real battle for the lead on our hands, lol.

Kimber-Smith comes through again; never can count him out. It's obvious he's one of the better drivers in the PC class, in my opinion.
Also great job from Dane Cameron in the Zee-Zed 4 (Hindhaugh ); hard to imagine 100 laps at any track without stopping, lol. That's 150 miles in one stint--going to have to see how long a normal stint is now.
All in all, kind of a slow burner, but a good finish as always. A bit of a shame for Simpson, but a cool race nonetheless.
See you guys next week for Indycar, and the week after for Road America.

Since you mentioned him, Sean Rayhall will be driving for 8Star's Indy Lights team at Mid-Ohio. I think he may be the most versatile next-gen racer around: multiple championship titles and dozens of wins already in Skip Barber, SCCA Formula Enterprises, stock cars on ovals (Legends, Late Models, USAR), IMSA Prototype Lites, LMPC (both sprint and endurance events) and Indy Lights.
Team sponsorship issues have curtailed some of his planned racing this year, but as he's just 20 I think his best has yet to come.

Would tend to agree, as I've watched him race most of those. He's mellowed a lot since the aforementioned fine-magnet incident, lol.Since you mentioned him, Sean Rayhall will be driving for 8Star's Indy Lights team at Mid-Ohio. I believe he was in 8Star's Lites team as well as their PC team before they moved to Indy. Much prefer him to Karam, though I'd imagine that would be royally confusing as a commentator.

Get it right, it is a space travelling phone box!

Well if you want to get picky it's a time-travelling spaceship disguised as a police box with a broken chameleon circuit.

A little KarenGillan fixation is no bad thing for a young man...
I have never seen Lime Rock on the telly before, a nice little track. But a curious lack of imagination in the corner and straight names.
