We often hear that the number one rule in motorsport is to not take out your team mate in a race.

But I was curious to know just how many times this has happened. There's three incidents I can remember, but maybe there's some I'm missing or have forgotten about.

MotoGP - Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden, Estoril 2006.

I remember this one vividly, mostly for Nicky Hayden's reaction after it happened. Pedrosa collided with Hayden at Estoril in 2006. At the time, Nicky Hayden was leading the championship with two races left to go, seemingly handing the championship to Valentino Rossi on a platter.

F1 - Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, Istanbul 2010

Perhaps the one most people will remember the best, when Red Bull imploded at Turkey. The fall out was pretty spectacular too, with Red Bull seemingly trying to lay the blame at Mark Webber's door more than Vettel's.

And who can forget this photo in a subsequent press release?

article-0-09EE625B000005DC-835_468x286.j

BTCC - Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden, Oulton Park 2011

Not as high profile as the other two, but still pretty funny. Team mates colliding at the last corner of the last lap, when on for a certain one-two. 'The Hondas do a Red Bull!'

Then there was IndyCar at Detroit this year, when two Ganassi cars and two Penske cars managed to collide in the same race. :drunk:

So, can anyone think of any others?

Also in Indycar this year CFH racing teammates Ed Carpenter and Josef Newgarden collided at Fontana. Carpenter, co-owner of the team, drifted up into Newgarden.

Pretty sure Sato did this at some point either in IndyCar or F1. Same for Maldonado... I know he's had contact with RoGro this year, but has he actually taken him out of a race yet? It's only a matter of time...

I was infuriated by Pedrosa, but thankfully things had a way of sorting themselves that season.

Also- Japan 2007. Not really teammates as such, but Vettel (Toro Rosso) rammed Webber (RBR) while they were running 2nd and 3rd under a safety car. Took Webber out of a shot at what could have been his first win. Vettel had a cry about that one, if I recall. Bit different than Turkey 2010

Didn't Danica's team-mate in "NASCAR Saturday Night" take her out? Forgotten his name, not really into NASCAR.

Ferrari's top man Tony Brooks went into the final round of 1959 with a shot at the championship. This shot effectively ended when von Trips rammed him.

Not that I paid much attention to Mark Webbers F1 career ;) but he has had a couple of run ins with teammates, the Red Bull - Turkey incident has been mentioned but there was also a collision with Nico Rosberg in Brazil 06 (which is where the Britney nickname came from iirc :p) Also the last race for Jaguar ended with both cars out after they hit each other.

The Lotuses and McLarens hit each other, though it was caused by Ricciardo.

Oh, I remember now. I have a short memory. :p

There was this during the Daytona 24 hour race earlier this year. The two factory GTLM Porsches remove themselves from contention...thanks to a GTD Aston.

Ralf and Fisichella got together again in 1997 at Nurburgring (along with Michael Schumacher):

I think Villeneuve and Zonta came together at Hockenheim in 2000. They also had some sort of agreement to crash individually at Eau Rouge in 1999, so they psychologically took each other out!

Andrea de Cesaris was generally oafish, clueless and outright dangerous for most of his Formula 1 career and it is an indictment of the laxity of discipline that he was allowed to get away with it for so long.

But the most oafish incident in his career - which, let's face it, is quite a difficult choice, he had to miss a race for McLaren because he had ruined so many chassis via his 17 crashes in 14 entries - was at the US Grand Prix 1989.

Alex Caffi was his team-mate in the Dallara and was on for a podium with a stellar drive, running second for a while, and came up to pass de Crasheris with 20 laps to go.

AdC claimed "I didn't see him" when he turned in and comprehensively took him out.  Presumably the son of the Marlboro head in Italy also didn't see the blue flags or the waved blue flags.

"But ensign14," I hear you yell.  "If de Cesaris was such a liability, how come Caffi was behind him?"

That's an easy one.

Caffi was lapping him.

Kimball took Dixon out earlier this year.

The thing is with IndyCar currently, the chances of colliding with a team mate are extremely high given 3 teams occupy half the grid.

It's funny - that was one of the incidents I thought of but didn't put it in the thread because it wasn't caused by one of the drivers.

A lot of these are first lap incidents. While obviously not ideal, I think generally those are more forgivable from the team's perspective because it's usually chaos, especially in the midfield, and sometimes like at Silverstone this year there are mitigating factors. The really heinous ones are things like Caffi/De Cesaris while being lapped or Vettel ramming Webber under a safety car and removing both from podium positions. Those types of incidents probably involve a lot of hang wringing and lengthy team meetings.
