I've just had a dodgy e-mail from "Nathan Beehl" and amongst the 20-odd addressees I recognise several people who post on the Forum and one, David McKinney, who used to.

Have we had our details hacked, or have they simply been sold on?

We will never sell or give E-mail addresses to a third party. If you've ticked the box to hear from partners of Autosport/Haymarket, you might get an E-mail about motorsport related companies (eg. a circuit with an upcoming event and a link to tickets) but these E-mails will ALWAYS be sent out from our E-mail system rather than by the third party company.

[Edited to add] We have not sent an E-mail relating to anyone named Nathan Beehl, so this should definitely not be anything to do with us.

I'm not aware of any sort of hack, but I'll ask our development team to look into this to confirm that everything is secure.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

I get enough unwanted emails without ticking boxes to get more, so I wouldn't expect to get any as a direct result of participating in this forum, hence my conclusion that someone had hacked into an address book, which could have been Autosport's.

The e-mail I was sent seemed to originate in Mumbai, but that is not definite of course.

If you have been in email contact with any of these addressees or they have your email address in their book (plus the others you recognise) it is possible their book was hacked and emails sent out to that person's contacts  - without Autosport being at all involved.

The real Nathan Beehl writes on Ferraris, lives in Luton and posts here as pilota.

Nathan Beehl here. I think it was probably my email that was hacked as I had a few friends contact me about a dodgy email. Apologies to anyone affected.

Thanks for telling us this!

I though it more likely that the hacking was to do with this website, as I couldn't think that my address would have been in your system.

As you see I started this thread with that post on 6 August and it ran its course in just under a month

What is going on, as people still seem to use the silly "like" system on that August e-mail some 3½ months on - the latest today from someone whose profile gives

Sorry, you don't have permission for that!

"This member is no longer active."

Now I look, profiles of others who "like" that post give the same result

All of them are either on probation (have less than 30 posts) or did not send the e-mail validation mail when they joined, might be a reason for that.

Strangely, I had likes from exactly the same posters on a post many months ago, over a long period too. Like you, I did exactly the same in response with the same result.

One can only wonder how many months probation they have been sentenced to . . .

Always thought the "like" button was aimed at the "teenage bedroom" membership, and this seems to endorse that.

You are on Probation as long you are not a "full member" (at least 30 posts), some people are now for 15 years on probation in that sense. But it doesnt necessary mean that you cant see their profile.
